Dreams from Many Rivers
Dreams from Many Rivers: A Hispanic History of the United States Told in Poems | Margarita Engle
5 posts | 4 read | 5 to read
Frpm award-winning poet Margarita Engle comes a new, illustrated middle grade verse history of Latinos in the United States, told through many voices. From Juana Briones and Juan Ponce de Len, to eighteenth century slaves and modern-day sixth graders, the many and varied people depicted in this moving narrative speak to the experiences and contributions of Latinos throughout the history of the United States, from the earliest known stories up to present day. It's a portrait of a great, enormously varied, and enduring heritage. A compelling treatment of an important topic.

A comprehensive narrative in verse of the experiences and contributions of Latinos throughout the history of the United States - from 1491-2018. Lyrical and moving poetry.

I didn‘t love the poetry format but I did LOVE this middle grade introductory journey through the Hispanic history of the US from 1491 to present day. There were a few names and stories I recognized and many I did not which has inspired further reading. This would be an excellent addition to any classroom.

Dreams from Many Rivers is an excellent middle-grade poetry collection that explores exploitation, racism, refugee status, forced changes in nationality, and other challenging topics from a Hispanic and US context. These poems brought emotion to historical figures and experiences, bringing their subjects to life. I missed out on the Illustrations because I listened to this book! #POCVisibility #HispanicHistory #Equality #Poetry

For me, it‘s a third language, after the Creole
I picked up from my Haitian father
and Spanish from my mother
in the Dominican Republic.

Sometimes it‘s hard for me to imagine
knowing only one way of describing
hope.

julesG Depending on how important regional dialect versus regular high German is, English is either my fourth or my third language. I had a year of Russian before the Berlin Wall fell. Ha, that means 30 years ago I was sweating over cyrillic letters. Likewise, 29 years ago I was dancing for joy of being allowed to learn English. 4y
cherinium @julesG That is very interesting! I wish the US placed a higher priority on foreign language study. It is so much harder to master a new tongue as an adult. I wholeheartedly admire all of you that are multilingual. 💕 4y
Deifio I love learning new languages! It's so much fun! 4y
