The Birds
The Birds | Tarjei Vesaas
Set in the Norwegian countryside over the course of one summer, The Birds tells the story of forty-year-old Mattis, who has mental disabilities and lives in a small house near a lake with his sister Hege, who ekes out a modest living knitting sweaters. From time to time Hege encourages her brother to find work to ease their financial burdens, but Mattis's attempts to work at the surrounding farms always end in failure and disgrace. Mattis is keenly aware of the distance between himself and the world around him, which often feels hostile; the villagers call him Simple Simon. Profoundly sensitive to his surroundings, Mattis spends much of his time in the forest, reading its signs and symbols: A woodcock begins a daily flight over their house, a beautiful bird is waiting for him on the path one day when he returns from the store, and one afternoon lighting strikes one of the two withered aspen trees outside the house -- trees known in the village as "Mattis-and-Hege." When Mattis decides to employ himself as a ferryman, the only passenger he manages to bring across the lake is a lumberjack, Jrgen. When Jrgen and Hege become lovers, Mattis finds he cannot adjust to this new situation. Wholly reliant on Hege and terrified of losing her, he clings to the familiar and does everything in his power to make Jrgen leave. Simultaneously, he struggles to find a place for himself in a world that does not seem to want him. With spare simplicity, Vesaas's straightforward prose subtly reveals Mattis's perspective and readers will find themselves shifting irrevocably from observers of his experience to participants in it. Written by one of Norway's most celebrated and beloved authors, The Birds is a deeply nuanced examination of identity and responsibility, with abundant narrative suspense and hauntingly beautiful writing besides.

Mattis lives happily with his sister Hege, enjoying nature in the Norwegian woods. The only trouble is other people: they taunt him with the name 'Simple Simon' and he can't keep a job. This is a partly a character study about not fitting in, but not entirely. There's something about how he looks for signs in nature and with people that was fascinating, like the odd way Mattis does it made me more aware of how I do a version of the same thing.

Billypar Thanks @BarbaraBB for recommending Vesaas. This was one of my favorites of the year - I will definitely be seeking out more of his! 3y

A view of all my TBR stacks together. I see them all the time, but they're an important reminder of alternative ways I could be spending my time when I'm addicted to news coverage.

Aimeesue Yes! The news is heartbreaking, but I have a hard time tearing myself away. For the sake of my mental health, I have to consciously restrict my consumption. Books are the best remedy. ❤️ 4y
AmyG I, too, am addicted to news. I am trying hard not to watch it all day.. and Geek Love is a wild book. Enjoy your reading. 4y

The protagonist, Mattis, is a 37 year old man living with his sister who has taken care of him since they lost their parents as young. Mattis probably has a light version of what we today know as Autism or Aspergers, but at the time the book was written this was not a formal diagnosis.

We get the narrative through Mattis, and this is done brilliantly so that the reader is drawn into a slightly confused mind. ⬇️

hilded But Mattis is also able to recognise difficult feelings both from the people around him, as well as within him. Mattis knows himself that he is not as sharp as others, and he is very sensitive to this. He is also looking for answers and connections that are not so obvious to others, but somehow Veesas manages to make it somewhat understandable for the reader.

Strong and powerful book that awakes many emotions.

BarbaraBB I loved this book soooo much ❤️💜 5y
hilded @BarbaraBB & @Currey It‘s a gem of a book indeed ❤️I read it once before in my teens, but it made much more of an impact now. Unfortunately I don‘t think the author is very well known outside of Norway/Scandinavia. 5y
BarbaraBB After The Birds I read more of his books and they are all good! 5y
hilded @BarbaraBB Agree 🤗 He writes in ‘nynorsk‘ (‘New Norwegian) which is the second written language in Norway, and it‘s very lyrical. I love reading books in ‘nynorsk‘ (lots of people don‘t though). 5y
BarbaraBB @hilded That‘s interesting, I didn‘t know about that language. I read it in Dutch, before it was translated in English! 5y
Liz_M I loved the story and the ambiguous ending! 5y

Thank you @BarbaraBB for this gem of a book!
Mattis has learning disabilities. The townsfolk call him simple but he's a complex character: endearing, boastful, irascible and acutely sensitive to the meaning of birds flying over the house. He doesn't get why the "strong, clever ones" like his carer-sister don't care about these things, busy fretting about money. Then a newcomer arrives and Mattis must make sense of new patterns. A wonderful book!

BarbaraBB I am so happy you liked it. I discovered it coincidentally and loved it. When I was stalking you on Litsy I thought you must like it too! 6y
quietlycuriouskate @BarbaraBB I love it! I love Mattis' way of interpreting his world and his attempts to find and secure his place in it. And poor Hege grabbing her chance of happiness with both hands. I love how it's beautiful and deeply moving without being heavy-handed: sad, I think, yet somehow still affirming. Thank you, again! 😘 6y

For Mattis, people never see what is important--the flight of a woodcock, the straight wake of a row boat, the joy of being treated like a man. Instead, they only seem to be annoyed, busy, or just too clever. They don't sit on humps or rocks and their hands are never confused. The story of Mattis's summer in a cottage by a lake is fraught with emotion, like a duck swimming--seemingly calm and deliberate, yet a whirlpool of confused fury below.

BarbaraBB One of my favourite books that hardly anyone knows - it seems - so I am glad you liked it too! 6y

Hege cares for her "simple-minded" brother, Mattis, living a monotonous life of endless knitting on a small landholding outside of town. Life seems poised to continue on, unchanging, forever. Then Jørgen arrives and destabilizes everything.

The novel is told from Mattis' perspective with spare and deceptively simple language. The author is able to show the heartbreaking differences of the siblings. The novel is open ended, but likely dire.

Liz_M The weekend I read this novel I also went to the Met Museum to see an exhibit of paintings by the Norwegian painter Peder Balke. I've included my favorite in the collage. 6y
BarbaraBB This might be my favourite of the list. In any case it it was quite a discovery. Great review! 6y

Read this book! It is one of the best books I read in a long time. It is the story of Mattis, a simple man who lives with his sister. His thoughts are so beautiful, you have to love him and become part of him. Read this book!
