Eiger Dreams
Eiger Dreams: Ventures Among Men and Mountains | Jon Krakauer
8 posts | 14 read | 14 to read
No one writes about mountaineering and its attendant hardships and victories more brilliantly than critically acclaimed author Jon Krakauer. In this collection of his finest work from such magazines as Outside and Smithsonian, he explores the subject from the unique and memorable perspective of one who has battled peaks like K2, Denali, Everest, and, of course, the Eiger. Always with a keen eye, an open heart, and a hunger for the ultimate experience, he gives us unerring portraits of the mountaineering experience. Yet Eiger Dreams is more about people than about rock and icepeople with that odd, sometimes maniacal obsession with mountain summits that sets them apart from other men and women. Here we meet Adrian the Romanian, determined to be the first of his countrymen to solo Denali; John Gill, climber not of great mountains but of house-sized boulders so difficult to surmount that even demanding alpine climbs seem easy; and many more compelling and colorful characters. In the most intimate piece, The Devils Thumb, Krakauer recounts his own near-fatal, ultimately triumphant struggle with solo-madness as he scales Alaskas Devils Thumb. Eiger Dreams is stirring, vivid writing about one of the most compelling and dangerous of all human pursuits.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A collection of magazine pieces and essays about ice climbing, mountaineering, and the people who brave these dangerous adventures. I‘ve been meaning to read this for ages so very much enjoyed dipping in and out of this over the last few weeks. I‘m now a Krakauer completist! He‘s absolutely one of my favorite nonfiction authors.

Suet624 I agree...I've enjoyed everything I've read by him. Haven't read this one though. 1y
britt_brooke @Suet624 I wish he‘d put out something new, but sadly someone asked him recently on IG if he was working on anything and he said no. 🙁 1y

Suet624 Really? That's sad. I wonder why? 1y
Graywacke Interesting that he‘s not working on anything. ( @Suet624 ) I really loved Into the Wild. I‘ve read a couple others too. I‘ve thought about reading this one. 1y
britt_brooke @Suet624 @Graywacke I wonder if he was lying because he didn‘t want to discuss. hope so! 1y
TheRiehlDeal Strangely, I‘ve never heard of this one. Is this one of his first books? 1y
britt_brooke @TheRiehlDeal It was his first, published in 1990. It‘s definitely not as well-known as his others, but still good! 1y
Suet624 I was thinking the same thing. Fingers crossed. 1y

“One school of thought holds that life in the tent so numbs the intellect that the only literature capable of sustaining interest is simple-minded, shallow stuff, heavy on the action: science fiction, pornography, thrillers.” - Krakauer, on what to read when mountaineering weather dictates you spend days upon days trapped in your smelly tent 😂

Finished another Jon Krakauer book which was a goal of mine for 2021. Eiger Dreams is a collection of essays about alpine climbing and other extreme sports/ activities. It may not sound interesting to the average person, but Krakauer makes you feel as if you‘re there on the mountain, in the canyon, in the plane, etc. Highly recommend for anyone interested in nonfiction reading and nature/ outdoor writing. 5⭐️

Afternoon reading 😊 I‘m still working on The Stand, but I want to tackle it bit by bit and need an alternative in between.

#bookhaul number one during vacation. Whenever I travel to my favorite vacation spots, I hit up the local independent bookstores and can't resist supporting them by buying a stack of books while feeding my need to buy more books! 📚📚📚❤

The oldest, most widespread stories in the world are adventure stories, about human heroes who venture into the myth-countries at the risk of their lives, and bring back tales of the world beyond men . . . It could be argued . . . that the narrative art itself arose from the need to tell an adventure; that man risking his life in perilous encounters constitutes the original definition of what is worth talking about. Finished this quick little read on the flight to Mexico. I love everything Krakauer has ever written - even though I hate camping and reading about camping, I could read about mountaineering all day every day.
