The Girl Who Played Go
The Girl Who Played Go: A Novel | Shan Sa
5 posts | 6 read | 6 to read
As the Japanese military invades 1930s Manchuria, a young girl approaches her own sexual coming of age. Drawn into a complex triangle with two boys, she distracts herself from the onslaught of adulthood by playing the game of go with strangers in a public square--and yet the force of desire, like the occupation, proves inevitable. Unbeknownst to the girl who plays go, her most worthy and frequent opponent is a Japanese soldier in disguise. Captivated by her beauty as much as by her bold, unpredictable approach to the strategy game, the soldier finds his loyalties challenged. Is there room on the path to war for that most revolutionary of acts: falling in love? From the Trade Paperback edition.

Mehso-so

♟Told via 2 unnamed POVs; a teenage girl & a Japanese soldier.
♟POVs chaps aren‘t distinguished, which can make story slightly disorienting at times.
♟Super short chaps.
♟Parallels between two characters offer contrasting insight into JPN invasion of Manchuria; colonisers vs colonised.
♟Story about loss of innocence & loss of hope.
♟Fast-paced yet narrative drags in places.
♟Tragic finale.
♟TW: Torture, violence, molestation, attempted rape.
♟3/5.

#readjanuary day 12: #girlinthetitle
Turns out I've read more "girl" books than I realized and that I really liked these! Have you read any of these "girl" books?

(Also now I'm wondering about "women/woman" titles, "boy" and "man/men" titles. Perhaps in next month's prompts!)

Readingrobin Great list! 7y
Larkken I have the audiobook of Brownstein's memoir on my phone now. Really looking forward to it! 7y

TelevisionNeighbor I have a lot with woman/women I noticed while I was looking for "girl" titles. 7y
respekt1111 Hunger Makes me a Modern Girl!👍👍👍 7y
Ruri_kaichou The Wild Girl cover is pretty! 7y
Weaponxgirl I liked hunger makes me a modern girl but I also thought she didn't make being in a band sound that fun. Was a change from the usual fawning and preening you get in a lot of books by musicians. She obviously loves the music for itself rather than the image 7y
rubyslippersreads @Ruri_kaichou Ooooh, I want to read that one! 😍 7y
LeahBergen I've had The Icarus Girl on my shelf for years 😬 7y
amckiereads The Icarus Girl 😍😍 but also, not on your list, The Girl Who Slept With God. Looking at my LibraryThing... I didn't realize there were so many!!! 7y

Lmstraubie Brown Girl Dreaming 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 7y

RealLifeReading @AudreyMorris it was quite a few years ago that I read The Girl Who Played Go but remember quite liking it 7y
RealLifeReading @Larkken I listened to it too and really liked it. 7y
RealLifeReading @Kristajayec a topic for next month! 7y
RealLifeReading @respekt1111 @Weaponxgirl yes that stood out a lot in the book. Actually I hadn't listened to much S-K music before that but it was still a good read! 7y
RealLifeReading @Ruri_kaichou @rubyslippersreads Wild Girl was a pretty interesting read about the neighbour of the Grimm brothers. Sort of like a behind-the-scenes as to how they gathered their stories. 7y
RealLifeReading @lmstraubie @GlitteryOtters I read Brown Girl Dreaming as an audiobook which she narrates and the funny thing is while I knew it was a novel in verse, as an audiobook it didn't sound like one. I will have to read the book itself one day 7y
BkClubCare I was shocked to find that I have 55 books in my goodreads stacks with "girl" in the title! 7y

I don't really have a #januarytbr, just a list of various reading challenge books that I shelved together. I'm currently reading The God of Small Things and I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to read when I finish it. I'm leaning towards Nimona though or maybe Gospel of Loki. #readjanuary @RealLifeReading
