Jessamy Harrison is eight years old. Sensitive, whimsical, possessed of a powerful imagination, she spends hours writing, reading or simply hiding in the dark warmth of the airing cupboard. As the half-and-half child of an English father and a Nigerian mother, Jess just can't shake off the feeling of being alone wherever she goes, and other kids are wary of her terrified fits of screaming. When she is taken to her mother's family compound in Nigeria, she encounters Titiola, a ragged little girl her own age. It seems that at last Jess has found someone who will understand her. TillyTilly knows secrets both big and small. But as she shows Jess just how easy it is to hurt those around her, Jess begins to realise that she doesn't know who TillyTilly is at all.

Mehso-so

I really was blown away by the beginning of this book. I was already scared of finishing it a few pages in! Unfortunately the second half became really repetitive and woolly for me, lots of text and not much explanation or movement. Not sure how the ending came about but it felt a bit like the author didn‘t know where to take it and did a ‘then I woke up‘ finish.

I can‘t believe it took me this long to read Helen Oyeyemi. In this book she captures what the world looks like when you‘re a child and how powerless you can feel, and combines this with a spine-tingling fairy tale. Loved it and can‘t wait to read more of her work.

Cathythoughts Great title & cover 4y
vivastory I loved White is For Witching & What Is Not Yours Is Not Yours 4y
sarahbarnes Thanks for the recs @vivastory! That helps me decide one of hers to read next! 4y
readordierachel I need to read this one. I loved White is for Witching and am reading Gingerbread now and it's great. 4y
sarahbarnes @readordierachel I‘ll be interested to hear what you think of Gingerbread. I‘ve wondered about it, and now after reading this one I‘m definitely adding it to my list. 4y

‘“Two hungry people should never make friends. If they do, they eat each other up. It is the same with one person who is hungry and another who is full: they cannot be real, real friends because the hungry one will eat the full one. You understand?”‘

‘...she couldn‘t find the words to tell TillyTilly that sisters was something about being held without hands, and the skin-flinch of seeing and simultaneously being seen.‘

Grandpa&Jess never lied.

Nute Isn‘t that a truthful concept? 4y
Afua @Nute Right?! I‘ve definitely seen proof of this in my own life 4y

This book reads like an incredibly creepy fairytale. Not at all what I was expecting based on the description, but a great read nonetheless!

I picked this off my shelf at random to study the plot structure (I'm currently doing a course in plotting a novel). I would have got more emotionally invested in it had I just been reading for pleasure. I liked the premise and the set-up very much but found the middle over-long and then the ending was abrupt and a bit "convenient". That said, of course I bow to her for being so ridiculously talented as to write this whilst doing her A-levels!

Flitter This makes so much sense (her age) as I agree with your review. It felt like a fantastic idea badly finished 4y

Today‘s author spotlight: Helen (Olajumoke) Oyeyemi! The 34-year-old Brit moves from Nigeria to London when a girl. She studied at Cambridge University, where she already had her first book written (the tagged one) and two of her plays performed to critical acclaim. Her books have garnered her a number of awards, including the PEN and Shirley Jackson Award, and gotten her onto lists like “25 under 25”. #AuthorPotpourri #TheMoreYouKnow

Copwithabook My best advice for getting through grad school- get a really good planner! Keep powering through. I believe in you! 7y
wellreadredhead @Copwithabook That is solid advice! I am such a type A personality and have kept an extremely organized and detailed planner for most of my life. I would spontaneously combust without it! Thanks for the encouragement - only two more semesters after this one! 7y
Zelma Great advice, @Copwithabook . My week-at-a-glance planner was a godsend in grad school. 7y

#Fiercefeb #tobeyounggiftedandblack Helen Oyeyemi wrote this first novel of hers at 18, published by 20, and at just 33 yrs old has published 5 novels, 2 plays and a short story collection..... I‘ve loved everything I have read of hers, and can‘t wait to read more....

batsy Wow! Now I feel like a total slacker 😂 Yet another author I've been meaning to check out. Nice pick 👍 7y
Cinfhen Wow! Super impressive 7y
Vivi10 Hi! I have a question for you about this book. I‘m very new to this app, so I don't know how to send a direct message. I have read this book, and we have a discussion about it, and my question is, what is the role of literature in this book? In your opinion. I mean in the book the mother is an author, Jess loves to read, grandpa has a lot of books. Ect. Thank you 🤗 5y

Oh, man, I love Oyeyemi so much. This is her first novel, written when she was 18 years old (18 YEARS OLD), and I couldn‘t put it down. Jess, our 8yo protagonist, picks up an unusual friend (TillyTilly) while in Nigeria, visiting her mother‘s family. There are themes here Oyeyemi will echo later on in her excellent ghost story, White is For Witching, and as is typical, she leaves certain plot elements unresolved. 18 YEARS OLD, people. -suzanne

Bailedbailed

Mind-numbingly boring. Bailed a quarter of the way in.

Natasha.C.Barnes Oh that sucks, it was on my list. 8y
LeahBergen Nooo! Really?! 8y
shawnmooney @Natasha.c.barnes @LeahBergen I have a serious allergy to young, dull protagonists. I just cannot cope... :) 8y

CJEskriett It was quite controversial at our bookclub. I liked it but I LOVED Boy, snow, bird 8y
Lindy @CJEskriett Controversial at my book club too. It was years ago, but I remember liking it. I've gone on to everything by Oyeyemi since. 8y
shawnmooney @CJEskriett @Lindy If you can remember, I'm curious as to what the controversy was about? I didn't find it controversial, I just found the girl profoundly boring and I could not continue. :-) 8y
CJEskriett @lindy @shawnmooney If I remember correctly it was to do with what elements/how much was real and what was magical/imaginary/symbolic. I don't always worry about understanding exactly what I'm reading if I'm enjoying it (its supposed to be fun ) whereas some of my group members slave over every word and if there are unanswered questions feel they've failed. I do remember I was surprised it was so different to her other stuff 8y
Lindy @CJEskriett @shawnmooney Real vs imaginary was exactly the controversy. Also, whether familiarity with Igbo mythology would make a difference in appreciation. We were all impressed that Oyeyemi was so young when she wrote this. 8y
Lindy @CJEskriett @shawnmooney Oh yes, the title too. Why she referenced this particular Greek myth. 8y
shawnmooney @CJEskriett @Lindy Thanks! I didn't get far enough into it to experience any of that. I read Boy, Snow, Bird last year and thought I really liked it at the time; my estimation hasn't aged well. I'm liking it less and less as time goes by and the more I think back on it. 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney When I read Ali Smith's 'There but for the' the little girl reminded me of the protagonist in Icarus Girl. (edited) 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Surprised about Boy Snow Bird. The brilliance shines strong for me. 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy I don't want to say too much without rereading it. The writing was brilliant qua prose; but it did not feel at all like an American story about race, to me. There was something ethereal about the way she wrote about what she was writing about that sits less well with me over time as I think back. 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Coming at race and queer issues slant wise through folktale retelling is what makes it stand out 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney I like your description "ethereal" - and I find Oyeyemi also hits an inchoate visceral chord in me, so the balance offered by ethereal qualities sits well. 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy I obviously should have another go with it; I probably never will. :-) Anyway, in happier news I got a chance to listen to the latest episode of The Readers – I think it might be their best one yet – I absolutely loved it! :-) 8y
Lindy @shawnmooney Banish the "shoulds" from your reading life. The right book is at the right time. With The Readers podcast, I wonder if it's a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder? I loved it too. 8y
CJEskriett Definitely agree with @Lindy on banishing the "shoulds"! Life's too short. 8y
shawnmooney @Lindy @CJEskriett As probably the most notorious book-bailer on Litsy, I'm not too terribly repressed by reading shoulds - what I should've (!!) said is that I'm curious enough about my reaction to the novel and how it's changing over time that I kind of want to go back and reread. :-) Maybe someday! 8y

I've mentioned my irritation with books #withgirlinthetitle before, and then I found rather more in my collection than I expected. Darn it, hoisted by my own petard...
Most of these are still TBR #ReadJanuary

vivastory @Moray_Reads Thanks for reminding me of "The Girl with Ghost Eyes." This was buried in my TBR. I'll be looking for it at the library later. 8y

I really enjoyed this debut novel by Helen Oyeyemi. I think she did a good job capturing the essence of the awkward stages in this coming of age story. I have a few questions but overall I enjoyed the book. I look forward to reading her other books to see her progression in writing.

I loved this book when I read it for my lit class! Some parts were so creepy I got chills! You really get some insight into how another culture views the ideas of twins, dual identity, and the spirit world. You should definitely give it a try.
