Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1
Autobiography of Mark Twain, Volume 1 | Mark Twain
"I've struck it!" Mark Twain wrote in a 1904 letter to a friend. "And I will give it awayto you. You will never know how much enjoyment you have lost until you get to dictating your autobiography." Thus, after dozens of false starts and hundreds of pages, Twain embarked on his "Final (and Right) Plan" for telling the story of his life. His innovative notionto "talk only about the thing which interests you for the moment"meant that his thoughts could range freely. The strict instruction that many of these texts remain unpublished for 100 years meant that when they came out, he would be "dead, and unaware, and indifferent," and that he was therefore free to speak his "whole frank mind." The year 2010 marks the 100th anniversary of Twain's death. In celebration of this important milestone and in honor of the cherished tradition of publishing Mark Twain's works, UC Press is proud to offer for the first time Mark Twain's uncensored autobiography in its entirety and exactly as he left it. This major literary event brings to readers, admirers, and scholars the first of three volumes and presents Mark Twain's authentic and unsuppressed voice, brimming with humor, ideas, and opinions, and speaking clearly from the grave as he intended. Editors: Harriet E. Smith, Benjamin Griffin, Victor Fischer, Michael B. Frank, Sharon K. Goetz, Leslie Myrick"

I listened to the audio book which was approximately 25 hours long. It was read by Grover Gardner, who did a marvelous job of it. I enjoyed hearing about Twain‘s life in the 1800s. He told several amazing tales. He also shared many insights to human nature that I observe have not changed since his time on Earth. #audiomemoir

It's a gloomy, rainy day in Anchorage, and I'm also a little gloomy since my boyfriend is back to work for the next two weeks out of town. A trip to the used book store in my neighborhood is just what I needed to brighten my spirits. #TitleWaveBooks #shelfie

Pruzy How did you like The Circle? 7y
ReadingOver50 Loved The Circle 😍 7y
Mtroiano @Pruzy I liked it. It's kind of a current day 1984. I'm interested to see what they're going to do with the movie 7y
Pruzy @Mtroiano Yeah, definitely looking forward to it, plus Emma Watson is in it so how bad can it be?? (edited) 7y
Mtroiano @Pruzy she is perfect for that role! 7y

I got this #autobiography several years ago for Christmas or my birthday, I can't remember which. I'm sorry to say that I haven't started it yet. This is just Volume 1 and it's over 700 pages long. This will probably be a #slowread as well! #ReadJanuary

melrailey I had planned on reading this one too! Love Mark Twain. I took a college course on him and it was one of my favs. 7y

My wacky purchase of the day... a coat of arms. Now I know what your thinking... Dang, lucky... or not.

"The coat of arms of the human race ought to consist of a man with an axe on his shoulder proceeding toward the grindstone. Or, it ought to represent the several members of the human race holding out the hat to each other. For we are all beggars. Each in his own way." M. Twain

Reading these is no small feat! I'm not gonna lie, I didn't read every page. Just tidbits here and there while I cruised down the Mississippi on the American Queen. Twain insisted these were published 100 years after his death with a requirement of no editing! So he goes on some ornery diatribes.

ReadingEnvy What did you think of the cruise? It is so much spendier than Caribbean but we look at this company a lot. (And perfect reading for it btw.) 8y
LorneGuyland I found the first one difficult to get through. A lot of digressions into stuff that, frankly, was not too interesting. I'm waiting for the abridged edition. 8y
Gezemice Wow! That looks like hard work to me. I admire your dedication! 8y

Readaholics @ReadingEnvy the food was amazing! Clarins in your bathroom. Everyone was nice ( but older). Great as a present for my parents. They could take naps and meet us for dinner. But some of your stops were less than thrilling. 8y
NoShushing This set is on my list! Thanks for the reminder! 📚 8y
Sydsavvy I've dabbled in it. Loved what I read. But doing it on Kindle just doesn't work. I need the actual books. 8y
