Wild Nights! | Joyce Carol Oates
post image

Wild Nights is JC Oates' collection of stories on the final days of five American authors (Poe, Dickinson, Samuel Clemens, Henry James & Hemingway). Oates frequently explores the disparity between the public perception & the real life of the author (esp in the case of Clemens & Hemingway where they are performing the parts of Twain & Papa in public). There is also a great deal of ambiguity in each story. The first one, Poe Posthumous could (CONT)

vivastory be interpreted as a science experiment gone horribly wrong. One could also make a compelling argument that the entire story is imagined by Poe as he died from rabies. Then there is the very uncomfortable story about Twain. The collection has a fantastic preface by Oates, which is a sort of essay on the art of the short story. I loved this imaginative collection & agree with the NPR quote on the back, “The triumphant paradox here is that (CONT) (edited) 2w
vivastory in their dying Oates brings these writers ferociously back to life.“ 2w
Tkimsal Oates is sometimes challenging but, for me, always worth the effort! 2w

vivastory @Tkimsal I haven't read her novels, but I love her short stories. 2w
LeahBergen Well, this sounds interesting! 2w
Branwen Okay, Joyce Carol Oates is usually such a hit or miss with me - but your review really makes me want to check this one out! 2w
vivastory @Branwen I've only read her stories which I've had a lot of luck with. Her story The Doll-Master has stuck with me years after reading it. It's one of the creepiest I've read. I also really liked the anthology she edited American Gothic 2w

My favourite, and I love the ambiguity over the interpretation (I rarely agree with historians when it comes to most topics on literature and poetry, and this time is no different) 🤍🤎.

Joan of Arc | Mark Twain
post image

I got this book from a flea market back in 2016, finally got around to reading it. Almost halfway through the book, Joan hasn‘t saved France yet. But it‘s a really good read so far. Very promising!

TieDyeDude I listened to the audio and loved it! It is a very different kind of book from Twain, but still very much Twain :) 2mo

Mark Twain's classic The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884) is told from the point of view of Huck Finn, a barely literate teen who fakes his own death to escape his abusive, drunken father. He encounters a runaway slave named Jim, and the two embark on a raft journey down the Mississippi River.

I never would have listened to this if it wasn't for Nick Offerman! Enjoyable for this time of year.

I read this because my nephew has to read it for American Lit in college, and he'd like me to look over his essay. Try as I might, I just don't enjoy reading Twain. I can't shake the feeling that he was his own biggest fan.
