I first encountered this story through the 1975 film with Michael Caine and Sean Connery and enjoyed reading it on the ever wonderful @SerialReader .

I find reading Kipling to be a bit troubling, (what, with all that “white man‘s burden” crap 💩) but the story itself can be read from a 21st century lens as well.

Short, and brutal, this story is well written and thought provoking.

Libby1 @KathyWheeler - I watched this when my son was an infant so I may not have gotten everything out of it due to sleep deprivation! Thankfully that only lasted a few weeks as he made friends with sleep quite early in his life. I am forever grateful! 6y

There's a good chance I'll be stuck in this horrible traffic for 3 hrs or more.. 😭 Thank goodness I have an audio book that keeps me company.

Libby1 I've not read this but I liked the movie. 7y

Mehso-so

This story was written for Victorian men, so there were a lot of inside jokes and references to freemasonry that were over my head. It was enjoyable and short, but very dated. I honestly preferred the movie.

Two hapless British adventurers set out for a remote corner of Afghanistan to set themselves up as kings. Years later, things have surprisingly not gone to plan. A witty dissection of imperialism filled with adventure and humor. Trending today in Serial Reader!

MysteryMe Read this on the NoteStream app. Easy installments, and they have some great period images that really make the story pop. #NoteStream 8y

I read this book using the Serial Reader App. I really enjoyed it! It was an amusing, humorous read. A #critique of imperialism. Written by Kipling when he was just 22! An interesting, short read. 🤘 #SerialReader

Love Kipling's writing. Enjoyed Kim more, but this was a decent short story.

Started reading this using Serial Reader app, thanks to several people mentioning it here on Litsy. Love the idea of devoting 10-15 minutes' reading time to a bit of a classic title each day, even on days I'm too busy to read much.

eoanthoughts This is how I read it too! Just finished. :) 8y
