I listened to the audio of this, which West reads herself, and it was a great choice. This is a smart, bold, brash, honest book. West doesn't hold back and makes no apologies. #memoir #feminism
This story takes the reader inside O'Nan's imagining of F. Scott Fitzgerald's final years, struggling to make ends meet as a screenwriter in 1930s Hollywood in the face of his failing health and alcohol addiction. For whatever reason, I've always been more interested in Fitzgerald's life than his fiction and this book fit the bill for me. Compelling and sad. #24in48 #readathon
This sort of book is the literary equivalent of rubbernecking: so disturbing but you have to keep reading. Greenwood tackles tough material and characters that are often difficult to like, but she makes them so human and real that you need to learn where their choices will take them. #24in48 #24in48readathon #books #reading #readathon
An utterly charming read, perfect for a lazy summer day. This hit multiple buttons for me, from the bookish plot to the setting in the Scottish countryside.
A powerful, honest, and beautifully written look into the world of a sixteen-year-old girl who witnesses the unjust shooting of a friend by a police officer. Thomas taps into the heart of racial strife in America and shows just a small example of its effects. Highly recommended. #readathon #Deweys24hourreadathon #YA
Kicked off the year with this beautiful and emotional volume of poetry. Great choice.
My final pick for this weekend's #24in48. I know I won't finish until after the #readathon is over, but I'm making good progress.
Getting a start on this before calling it a night. Only about 40 pages in so far, but loving how weird and wonderful it is. Had heard many good things and it's been on my shelf a while. I seem to be on a roll with this #24in48!
Much as I loved the film version of this, the book is still much better. Some folks found the science too much, but I thought it made the book, along with the witty voice. So glad I read this for #24in48.
This isn't the type of book to change your life, but Newport makes a strong case for taking careful stock of how you allocate your time and the importance of weighing the costs vs. the benefits of losing chunks of your day to social media. A thought-provoking read with good advice.
The anxious-to-get-to portion of my current TBR pile seems to have sprouted quite a few doorstops. Where to start...
So much love for this play. I had seen it several times but somehow never read it. I'd forgotten how funny it is, not to mention wonderfully quotable.
The good ended happily, and the bad unhappily. That is what Fiction means.
After a couple of disappointing reads, this seemed like a good choice. Because Oscar Wilde.
Started reading this using Serial Reader app, thanks to several people mentioning it here on Litsy. Love the idea of devoting 10-15 minutes' reading time to a bit of a classic title each day, even on days I'm too busy to read much.
Intelligent, thoughtful series of essays about what it means to be a woman writer, a geek, and a feminist working in today's culture, with a particular focus on the Internet and social media. So much truth here.
