Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto | Chuck Klosterman
From the author of the highly acclaimed heavy metal memoir, Fargo Rock City, comes another hilarious and discerning take on massively popular cultureset in Chuck Klostermans den and your owncovering everything from the effect of John Cusack flicks to the crucial role of breakfast cereal to the awesome power of the Dixie Chicks.Countless writers and artists have spoken for a generation, but no one has done it quite like Chuck Klosterman. With an exhaustive knowledge of popular culture and an almost effortless ability to spin brilliant prose out of unlikely subject matter, Klosterman attacks the entire spectrum of postmodern America: reality TV, Internet porn, Pamela Anderson, literary Jesus freaks, and the real difference between apples and oranges (of which there is none). And dont even get him started on his love life and the whole Harry-Met-Sally situation. Whether deconstructing Saved by the Bell episodes or the artistic legacy of Billy Joel, the symbolic importance of The Empire Strikes Back or the Celtics/Lakers rivalry, Chuck will make you think, hell make you laugh, and hell drive you insaneusually all at once. Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs is ostensibly about art, entertainment, infotainment, sports, politics, and kittens, butreallyits about us. All of us. As Klosterman realizes late at night, in the moment before he falls asleep, In and of itself, nothing really matters. What matters is that nothing is ever in and of itself. Read to believe.

8-18-22: My 81st finished book of 2022! My first Klosterman. This is a book of essays about lots of random stuff. Written in 2003, there are a lot of older pop culture references which I enjoyed. Some examples: Saved By The Bell, Guns N‘ Roses, Reality Bites, Star Wars…all clever and entertaining. Even funny at times. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣8️⃣1️⃣

#curiouscovers I have read other Klosterman essays, & a fantastic novel by him (Downtown Owl), but this collection has been on my TBR basically since it was released in '03. I have been in a mood for essays lately & I might go ahead & read this one. I recently read the first one in the collection & found it really dated, so maybe I'll just check out his more recent work. Regardless this is probably one of the most iconic covers of an essay👇

Every other kid at Bayside was either a #nerd, a jock, a randomly hot chick, or completely nondescript; it was sort of like Rydell High in Grease. #QuotsyJan20

Hubby and I listened to this audiobook on our road trip the other day. It is HILARIOUS. A super funny take on things like - how much girls loved John Cusack in the 80's and why, The Real World, Coldplay, and much more.

It‘s been my experience that most extroverted people think they‘re #introverts, and many introverted people make a similarly wrongheaded juxtaposition about being extroverts. Maybe that‘s why extroverts won‘t shut up (because they always fear they‘re not talking enough) while introverts just sit on the couch and do nothing (because they assume everybody is waiting for them to be quiet).

I finally gave Klosterman a try but he gets added to things that just aren‘t for me.This book was published in 2004 and touches on past pop culture phenomenons like The Real World and Reality Bites but even when I was interested in the topic I found his need to refer to Winona Ryder‘s rack or describe a TV show as “the one about the retard” really jarring. It made me question why I should care about what he thinks about anything.

readordierachel Yuck. That would put me off too. 6y
GypsyKat Yeah, that would do it for me too. 👎 6y

Misogyny runs rampant, and Klosterman uses casual slurs from the get-go. Abandoned this book within a few pages.

I just can't. Skimmed the 1st essay because misogyny, skimmed a few more which were boring. It may be that the topics are dated, but hard pass just the same.

I'm reading all my impulse buys and get rid of ones I don't need for an upcoming move. It makes me feel as frazzled as my cat looks. Yes, he is kinda bald.

2BR02B I read and enjoyed a lot of Klosterman in my late teens, but it's hard for me to imagine revisiting them now, a decade later. He generally seems like kind of a douche. 7y
bookandcat Aww, sorry you didn't enjoy! I really enjoy Klosterman's work and musings on pop culture. It's not for everybody though 7y
Dorianna Klosterman is very hit and miss for me and I tend to think he's a tad overrated. 7y
Dorianna Also, good luck with the stressful business of moving. 7y
ohyeahthatgirl @Dorianna Thanks! I kind of live in a pop culture black hole, so I just think this one wasn't meant for me. I'll try something more recent. 7y

The Real World and Saved by the Bell discussions were great. He lost me with the sports and Billy Joel parts. Overall a great read/listen. #overdrive

The definitive volume on 90's and early 2000's pop culture. Even if you aren't a follower of celebrity and music news, this book is an intriguing look into what fascinates us as a culture.
