Anyone: A Novel | Charles Soule

Charles Soule brings his signature knowledge—and wariness—of technology to his sophomore novel set in a realistic future about a brilliant female scientist who creates a technology that allows for the transfer of human consciousness between bodies, and the transformations this process wreaks upon the world. Inside a barn in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a scientist searching for an Alzheimer’s cure throws a switch—and finds herself mysteriously transported into her husband’s body. What begins as a botched experiment will change her life—and the world—forever… Over two decades later, all across the planet, “flash” technology allows individuals the ability to transfer their consciousness into other bodies for specified periods, paid, registered and legal. Society has been utterly transformed by the process, from travel to warfare to entertainment; “Be anyone with Anyone” the tagline of the company offering this ultimate out-of-body experience. But beyond the reach of the law and government regulators is a sordid black market called the darkshare, where desperate “vessels” anonymously rent out their bodies, no questions asked for any purpose - sex, drugs, crime... or worse. Anyone masterfully interweaves the present-day story of the discovery and development of the flash with the gritty tale of one woman’s crusade to put an end to the darkness it has brought to the world twenty-five years after its creation. Like Blade Runner crossed with Get Out, Charles Soule’s thought-provoking work of speculative fiction takes us to a world where identity, morality, and technology collide.

1. Forget The Alamo, Evil Roman Emperors, SW: Lords of the Sith
2. I rarely find HEA endings satisfying.

Neuroscientist Gaby White has discovered a life- and world-changing technology. The immediate aftermath of her discovery unfolds alongside events in the near future showing the changed world. Interesting read with good twists and turns plus food for thought. If you like Blake Crouch‘s recent books, you‘d like this, too.

New one by Charles Soule. Loved Oracle Year, so I have high hopes for this one. Mind transfer tech and all the good and bad that could bring. Go science!

The narrative unfolded at a blazing speed, and the characters were engaging and realized. I could easily see this one being made into a film. The book alternates between two different stories -- the first about the accidental invention and development of a new technology that really will change the the world. The second takes place in the near future, where that technology has become a part of everyday life.

Sneaking this in in between book club commitments. On a related note, if you haven‘t already read Oracle Year by Charles Soule, do yourself a favor and get on it!

vivastory The description calls it Blade Runner crossed with Get Out, but I honestly thought Recursion crossed with Altered Carbon. I love Soule's Curse Words & enjoyed Oracle Years, so I will check this out.. 5y
Schlinkles @vivastory Those are the two I was thinking of too when I read the description! 5y
vivastory Glad to hear that 😄 sometimes I think my comparisons are off the mark 5y

Hooked_on_books I really liked The Oracle Year, so I‘ll definitely look for this one. I‘m glad you posted this! 5y
Bookies Just finished tonight. I liked this one even more than Oracle year. 5y
Schlinkles @Bookies It was a lot darker than Oracle Year. I liked the twisty end too. I think I might like it more than Oracle Year too. 5y
Bookies He‘s obviously a clever guy (Soule), but i think he‘s developed as a writer. The alternating narrative made the pace fast. The cool thing was that both plot lines were equally compelling. 5y
Schlinkles @bookies Agreed! Usually when there are alternating narratives, I find myself more drawn to one over the others. It wasn‘t the case here. 5y
