From the author of Hot Dog Girl comes a fresh and funny YA contemporary romance about two teens who fall in love in an indie comic book shop. Jubilee has it all together. She's an elite cellist, and when she's not working in her stepmom's indie comic shop, she's prepping for the biggest audition of her life. Ridley is barely holding it together. His parents own the biggest comic-store chain in the country, and Ridley can't stop disappointing them--that is, when they're even paying attention. They meet one fateful night at a comic convention prom, and the two can't help falling for each other. Too bad their parents are at each other's throats every chance they get, making a relationship between them nearly impossible . . . unless they manage to keep it a secret. Then again, the feud between their families may be the least of their problems. As Ridley's anxiety spirals, Jubilee tries to help but finds her focus torn between her fast-approaching audition and their intensifying relationship. What if love can't conquer all? What if each of them needs more than the other can give?

This was the nuanced look at sexuality that I hoped for from her first novel. I loved the characters exploring whether their queer identities change when they have what looks externally like a heteronormative relationship. I also really respected the look at anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation and codependency in teenage relationships. The R&J retelling was cleverly done. And I like how the story wrapped up without glorifying the codependency

Loving the star-crossed lovers romance trope on this one! I thought characters are amazing yet flawed and I like the flow of the story!

A modern sort of retelling of Romeo and Juliet. It had the feuding families and the costume ball and the Romance. But when it came to what makes the original a tragedy it was a little hard to translate into a believable modern situation.

Oh my stars! This book! I haven‘t been that into YA lately, but I loved this book! It dealt with hard hitting subjects, in a lighter way. Some topics include: anxiety, suicidal depression, tense relationships between non supportive parents and has two main characters who are bi. ♥️ HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Currently sitting at 15h 30m for #MidyearPush

Jennifer Dugan liked my inane comment about Isabel Sterling. Then I went all fangirl on her and she liked that comment as well!

I have not been able to focus on reading at all since this pandemic broke out, but I‘m really going to try. I‘m thinking that something light and cute might be the way to go. ❤️

Bookworm83 Same! It‘s only been in the last week I‘ve been able to start reading again. 4y
Deifio Know what you mean. I had trouble too. Then I switched to light urban fantasy and paranormal romance book, my go to genres for feel-good. Hope it works for you! 4y
CoffeeAndABook I totally understand! I find it easier to concentrate on light, fun books or also books with a real pull, page turners. And I made a conscious decision to put my phone out of reach when reading, to avoid checking the news instead 😣 Oh and this books looks great! It‘s definitely stacked 📚 Hope you enjoy it ☀️ 4y

Sharpeipup I have struggled as well but find that “lighter“ books especially fantasy can hold my attention. Hope you enjoy it! 4y
GypsyKat @Bookworm83 @Deifio @CoffeeAndABook @Sharpeipup I‘m sorry that you‘ve all been struggling as well, but it honestly makes me feel a little better to know that I‘m not alone in this. 💜 4y
Bette Yeah it's been tough, when reading was always easy. I just read the first 10 chapters of Rowling's new book : The Ickabog free online. Something different at least. 🏰 4y

There was more to this story than I thought. Of course we have some star crossed lovers, given the title and all that but it touches on much deeper topics. Depression, anxiety, and mental health in general. It also deals with searching for your identity in the LGBTQ world. I love that there are YA books that deal with these topics-it is crucial for children to see others going through the same things they are.

1st book in the #24b4monday complete. This wasn‘t the light read that I thought it would be. But it did have an important message about dealing with and seeking help for depression and anxiety.

Jubilee and Ridley meet at a comic con. Her parents own a small indie shop. His run a cooperate chain. He agrees to spy on them to gain his dad‘s approval & spend more time with her. (Think You‘ve Got Mail, but with comics). I figured the bulk of this book was going to build to his identity being revealed. Dugan defy avoids making this the centerpiece of the story. The book about so much more. Issues around anxiety and depression are explored.

More of this in romance novels please! (Or maybe... all novels...)
