The Legacy of Ruth Bader Ginsburg | Scott Dodson
3 posts | 7 to read
Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a legal icon. In more than four decades as a lawyer, professor, appellate judge, and associate justice of the US Supreme Court, Ginsburg has influenced the law and society in real and permanent ways. This book chronicles and evaluates the remarkable achievements Ruth Bader Ginsburg has made over the past half century. Including chapters written by prominent court watchers and leading scholars from law, political science, and history, it offers diverse perspectives on an array of doctrinal areas and on different time periods in Ginsburg's career. Together, these perspectives document the impressive legacy of one of the most important figures in modern law.

Just days before her death, as her strength waned, Ginsburg dictated this statement to her granddaughter Clara Spera: "My most fervent wish is that I will not be replaced until a new president is installed."

So. Very. Sad. Love and peace to her family.

TBR Tuesday: Lady Biography Edition. This is some of my collection of Badass Lady Biographies™ that I haven't read yet. It is sorely lacking in ladies of color, LGBT ladies, & ladies that're basically not White cishet women. Any recs to diversify my collection (& double my TBR)? 🙋🏻🙋🏼🙋🏽🙋🏾🙋🏿 #ReadWomen

JennaRoot I'm taking a screenshot of this for my TBR! 8y

Notafraidofwords Ordinary Light by Tracy K. Smith is so good and very vivid. I also love Sally Mann's biography Hold Still. 8y
BookishFeminist @JennaRoot Yesssss. Enjoy! Let me know if/when you get around to reading of them & maybe we can compare notes! 8y
BookishFeminist @KVanRead I have the whole line of RBG-related books & paraphernalia. It's safe to say I'm a fan. :) 👸🏻 8y
BookishFeminist @tkingsanchez Ooo I didn't know that existed, but I absolutely love ZNH. I will have to find it! 8y
BookishFeminist @Notafraidofwords Both excellent choices! Tracy K Smith is amazing--I saw her speak here & she is incredible. Still need to read her book tho, as well as Sally Mann's. Both have been on my list a while! 8y
marie3blue @tkingsanchez Oh and it's another ZNH one too. lol:) 8y
Reviewsbylola The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is fantastic. There are a few in your stack that I've been eying as well and I think I have read the Jill Ker Conway. 8y
BookishFeminist @marie3blue That does look interesting. I'm gonna check it out. :) 8y
BookishFeminist @Reviewsbylola I've heard nothing but great things about the Henrietta Lacks book, so I think it's getting pushed up my stack soon! The Jill Ker Conway is super interesting- lots of tidbits from a smattering of lady autobiographies. I've read a few of the pieces and it's great! 8y
Verity Have you read Flappers by Judith Mackerell? Six women feature so if any annoy you they're not about too long and if you love any it's a good jumping off point to find more about them. The six include Tallulah Bankhead, Josephine Baker & Tamara de Lempicka so it's quite diverse too. 8y
Verity Totally forgot to tag the book! 8y
BookishFeminist @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled.com That book looks wonderful. Thanks! I ask, and you ladies are awesome at delivering. :) 8y
Legxleg Sophia: Princess, Suffragette, Revolutionary by Anita Anand is a great bio of Sophia Singh, an Indian-British suffragette (suffragist? You'd think I'd have the distinction down by now but I don't). 8y
BookishFeminist @Verity I have not! I have been wanting to, though. What a great suggestion. :) Thank you! 8y
BookishFeminist @Legxleg Oo that looks fascinating! I've seen it around but haven't ever picked it up. I think I will now. Thanks! :) 8y
tkingsanchez @marie3blue putting it on my TBR list. Thanks! 8y
Gezemice Henrietta Lacks is the best book I read this year, and I read a lot of great ones. Notorious RBG is on my list, too! I don't read feminist biography much, but The Life of Elizabeth I by Alison Weir is brimming with female brilliance and character at a time when women were doubted. 8y
RebL A little on the pop side of these titles, but I found reading about the reception of Jones' androgynous style and dark skin on the high fashion scene interesting. 8y
BookishFeminist @Gezemice That looks great! I think I will check it out. Thanks for the rec!! 8y
BookishFeminist @RebL I've been interested in her memoir since it came out, but haven't picked it up yet bc of the lukewarm reception it got. I might give it a shot now though bc I've always wanted to learn more about her. Thanks for the rec! 8y
RebL It got a lukewarm reception for a reason. Even so, the confirmation about how tastemakers affect what the rest of us are treated to was worth it for me. If you're interested in historical biographies, check out Matilde: Queen of the Conquerer and Catherine the Great. 8y
BookishFeminist @RebL Yea that's enough to et me interested in her memoir, too, even if it's just a glance through. :) great historical biography recs! Thanks! 8y
GuiltyFeat Pretty sure Henrietta Lacks was a woman of color. 8y
BookishFeminist @GuiltyFeat I'm aware--she was a Black woman. That book & the Sonia Sotomayor memoir are the only books re women of color in my stack, aside from some essays in the Written by Herself collection. I didn't say I didn't have *any!* 8y
JanJan Have you read Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl: by Issa Rae, Mindy Kaling's books, or Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels? 8y
ValerieAndBooks The Maya Angelou autobiographies. *I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings* is her best IMO (also the first). 8y
BooksIHeld I loved this memoir so much 8y
BookishFeminist @Janroddy Misadventures of An Awkward Black Girl is on my list! I've read Mindy Kaling's and am in the middle of Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels now. :) 8y
BookishFeminist @ValerieAndBooks Agreed! I don't know how my copy of IKWTCBS didn't make it to my stack, but I adore Maya Angelou. I have read a few of her memoirs & have all of her poetry. Even made cross stitch patterns of some! 8y
BookishFeminist @intervital That looks great! I love Margaret Cho & didn't even know she had a memoir--some fan I am! Maybe I'll grab it on audio if it's available. :) 8y
sparklemotion If you are counting memoirs, how about Janet Mock's? 8y
ValerieAndBooks Glad you like Maya Angelou too! What about *I am Malala*? I have not read *In Order to Live* by Yeonmi Park but it is required summer reading for my HS son and I want to read it after he does. (PS I tried to figure out tagging these books but failed). 8y
BookishFeminist @heartlesstree I am! Janet Mock's memoir is great. It's not pictured here because it's on my phone! :) 8y
BookishFeminist @ValerieAndBooks I Am Malala is wonderful- been meaning to buy it since I read the library's copy. In Order to Live is definitely on my list! As is 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Clinton's and Elizabeth Warren's are on my list to read this year too, although they hardly help with your diversity expansion. The Immortal life of HL is also sitting in my bookshelf with 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Agreed, I love I Am Malala. I've been meaning to read It's a What I do, too, but the others aren't on my list. They are now though! I have both of Clinton's books & Warren's as well--it's safe to say I'm a fan. :) Partway through Hard Choices and enjoying it. 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist They were all ones I added as part of my election year/politics read pre-election this year. So I have three of Clinton's and Warren's yet to read this year. It's What I Do was very good on audio, but I eventually bought the book anyway for her photos, so I currently own it 2 forms 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I read My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem earlier this year and added a few books by Wilma Mankiller to my TBR list, but I haven't read any of them yet. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Great recommendations! We have very similar reading taste. I read Gloria Steinem's book last year and did the same thing, but haven't tracked a copy of Wilma Mankiller's book yet. I have In the Country We Love out from the library right now. :) 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Have you checked out this one by Wilma Mankiller? 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist No, I haven't, I'll look for it. I just bought Every Day is a Good Day with my Amazon credit. I also picked up Angel Island & the Herland trilogy that I saw mentioned in The Secret History of WW which turned out to be a great feminist history read which I hadn't expected. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Again with the similar taste--I love the Herland trilogy (though haven't checked out Angel Island) but have The Secret History of WW on my shelf--Jill Lepore rocks! I also have 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist It was my first book by Jill Lepore, but I will definitely be reading more. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just started Joe Gould's Teeth by her & have read a few of her others. This one is really good since I know you enjoy politics sometimes 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist Angel Island has come up in a few early feminist reads, and it was a free kindle ebook, so easy click there. I also read my first Doris Kearns Goodwin this year, and added the rest of her books, and a biography of Ida Turnbell and a few others mentioned in the Bully Pulpit. 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa do you use Goodreads? I feel like we should find each other's profiles so we can stalk our shelves. We've got lots in common! I'm at www.goodreads.com/thebookfeminist 8y
BookishFeminist Doris Kearns Goodwin is awesome. I need to read Lincoln. My partner is a big history buff so he has loaded me up with tons of history recommendations! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @BookishFeminist I do! I'll look you up and add you. Just try not to judge all the fluff I read too! LOL! 8y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa Lincoln is on my list too! 8y
BookishFeminist @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I'm a judgment free zone when it comes to books! I read a lot of nonsense too when the mood strikes. :) 8y
