The oddest novella in this collection, and definitely the closest to horror. It‘s a story within a story with a slow-ish start as King has to set the outer story up. I really liked the inner story (a pregnant woman determined to have a successful delivery no matter what) but no doubt my background as a L&D nurse made me extra-interested. I wish there was more about the Club in the outer story… (more👇🏻)

Next up #readingStephenKing: Christine!!

intothehallofbooks …The Club reminded me of the Overlook Hotel bar and the Club‘s butler (Stevens) reminded me of the Overlook Hotel‘s bartender and caretaker (Lloyd and Grady). Not saying they‘re connected, but I definitely felt vibes of some sort. 2y

I had read the first 3 stories included in Different Seasons (all phenomenal btw) but never got to this one for some reason. Of course, SK then proceeds to rip my heart out with this and I‘m probably never going to be able to get this story out of my head. I guess you would classify it as horror. Can‘t go wrong with SK! 4⭐️

Is “John” possibly Jack Torrance? I don‘t remember all the time lines but if they match up, it could make sense.

First 40% of build up and then King gets to the point.

SomedayAlmost Dare I say it... King's work is often under-edited. Even clever digressions are digressions. His editors need to try to worth with him on that, even when he's King. My 2 cents, as a fan & writer. 7y

This was a hard novella to rate. I'm going to say pick because: 1) the narrator did a good job 2) the ending was totally creepy. Great ending. 3) the afterward was really cool! SK wasn't setting out to be a horror writer. He wrote Carrie then after sending in his next 2 stories chose 'Salems Lot. His editor told him after he mentioned The Shining that he would be seen as a horror writer and he went with it. Also speaks about novellas vs novels.

Lindy Thanks for your helpful review. 👍 8y

Another Stephen King audio for today's commute. It started off slow but then picked up. I was getting into it then the narrator (it's a story within a story) who is a doctor told us his theory on childbirth...that it really doesn't hurt that much...😦I'm sorry what?!? He claimed that women saw other women in movies in severe pain so it was basically pre-programmed into us to scream and be in pain. I've never had a kid but I'm calling bull on that

Kristio Only a man would write that!! Of course it hurts! I got an epidural, but even that doesn't take away the pain completely. 8y
Bookbeez Um yeah no. I didn't have an epidural and, trust me, there was plenty of pain involved. 8y
SusanInTiburon I assume that's a way of telling you something's off with the narrator. 8y

megt I haven't had a baby either, but that theory just makes me roll my eyes so hard. 8y
Smrloomis 🙄that's almost funny! 8y
Blair_Reads @Kristio @Bookbeez those were my thoughts! Only a man. Good lord @SusanInTiburon the narrator made a few other comments so I guess it's just his person. But oh my. @Smrloomis almost lol 8y
Blair_Reads @megt my jaw dropped lol. I couldn't believe anyone could think that 8y
Smrloomis Yup, just wow! 8y

Listening to The Breathing Method on audiobook. I am a HUGE Stephen King fan.

Blair_Reads Listening to this one right now. What are your thoughts?? I'm a big fan as well but this one isn't super great in my opinion. 8y
ErinRich I agree. It took me a few minutes to remember the plot, and that's sad since I finished it not too long ago. It ended up being "meh" for me. 8y
