Gun Street Girl
Gun Street Girl: A Detective Sean Duffy Novel | Adrian McKinty
14 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
Belfast, 1985, amidst the Troubles: Detective Sean Duffy, a Catholic cop in the Protestant RUC (Royal Ulster Constabulary), struggles with burn-out as he investigates a brutal double murder and suicide. Did Michael Kelly really shoot his parents at point blank and then jump off a nearby cliff? A suicide note points to this conclusion, but Duffy suspects even more sinister circumstances. He soon discovers that Kelly was present at a decadent Oxford party where a cabinet ministers daughter died of a heroin overdose. This may or may not have something to do with Kellys subsequent death. New evidence leads elsewhere: gun runners, arms dealers, the British government, and a rogue American agent with a fake identity. Duffy thinks hes getting somewhere when agents from MI5 show up at his doorstep and try to recruit him, thus taking him off the investigation. Duffy is in it up to his neck, doggedly pursuing a case that may finally prove his undoing. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Das Buch spielt 1985, also in meiner Jugend. Mir waren die Ereignisse im Hintergrund noch sehr vertraut.ich werde aber kein weiteres Buch dieser Serie lesen.

Did Michael Kelly kill his parents and then kill himself? Duffy suspects otherwise. Is an Oxford party where a cabinet member's daughter dies of a heroin overdose involved. Northern Ireland 1985 Irish Troubles. Dark and witty humor.
Adrian McKinty's writing gives you a sense of atmosphere of Northern Ireland. Plot moves quickly. I look forward to reading Rain Dogs next and I would recommend this series to those who love mystery thrillers.

Tove_Reads Since the Idiot has still not returned this one to the library 🤯😭🤬 I was wondering if it would be ok to read Rain Dogs without reading GSG first? Don‘t want to, but... 5y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I read that Rain Dogs can be read as a stand-alone 5y

This series just gets better and better. Sean Duffy is an excellent character and these are set at the time of the Irish Troubles, and have a sprinkling of events that happened at the time incorporated into them. Sean certainly doesn‘t know how to take no for an answer, and doesn‘t do things the easy way. Relationships seem to be an issue for him, & you often feel he is a loner. He doesn‘t give into authority and sees things through. Recommended.

EadieB @Andrew65 I just started this. You finished it quickly! 5y
Andrew65 @EadieB It kept leading me on to the next chapter! It is a relatively short book too. 5y
EadieB @Andrew65 it is interesting and fast moving! 5y

andrew61 A great series - his new stand alone The Chain is getting a lot of great reviews. 5y

We‘re due to start the fourth book in the #SeanDuffySeriesRead today, but as I am at my granddaughter‘s christening today and travelling to John O‘Groats after that (400 miles), I will not be able to start this one until tomorrow.
Do keep us all posted on your progression through the book. #AdrianMcKintySeriesRead

EadieB @Andrew65 @Tove_reads @JaclynW I may not be able to read this until Monday as I‘m working on my Buddy Read and listening to Jane Casey book. (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s no problem. 😊 We‘ll all be reading at our own speeds anyway. 6y
Tove_Reads I‘m still waiting for the Idiot who refuses to take it back to the library so I can read it. No way to know when that happens. 6y

Tove_Reads I‘ll probably read The Last Girl first. @Andrew65 @EadieB 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads I‘m planning to start The Last Girl Monday. Don‘t you hate it when people don‘t return books. That‘s why I like ebook lending, the book cannot be accessed or disappears after the due date. 6y
Tove_Reads @Andrew65 The punishment should be more than 20 cents a day! 🤯 6y
TrishB Enjoy your weekend 😁 6y
Andrew65 @Tove_Reads Destroy their library card! 😂 6y
Andrew65 @TrishB Thanks, hope you do too and get some good destressing time. 6y
JaclynW @andrew65 @eadieb @tove_reads I started the book. It's been slow going because I've been so busy with kid stuff and the school year ending. 6y
EadieB @Tove_Reads I think they should be prosecuted and get 20 years in jail. @Andrew 6y
Tove_Reads @EadieB Sounds good to me! @Andrew65 6y
Andrew65 @JaclynW We‘ve finished for a week having just completed the SATs, but then still another 7 weeks to go after that! 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 Seven more weeks!! Countdown! My kids are glad school is over and are excited for summer. 😊 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW How long do they have off over the Summer? 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 They are of until August 20th. 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW That‘s a long break. We get six weeks, although some schools have even shortened that! 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 You must get longer school breaks around Christmas and Easter. We don't, so we get out early for summer. My friends in Ireland have breaks like you it sounds like. 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW We have 2 weeks at Christmas and Easter, six weeks in the Summer, and 3 ‘1 week‘ half term breaks. All told children have 13 weeks away from school and do 39 school weeks. Think we have amongst the longest school year in Europe. (edited) 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 Wow! Do you like the school year broken up like this? 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW It has always been the set pattern so hard to compare it with other ways of organising the school year. Effectively six half terms of 6 or seven weeks in the Main. (edited) 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 We get a 2 week Christmas break. We only had Good Friday off around Easter this year. We do have a Spring Break (in March or April usually) that is 5 days typically. The rest of the days off school are 1/2 days or 1-2 day breaks here and there throughout the year (end of term, other minor holidays, teacher training days, etc.). 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW That explains the long Summer. Our children are 3 - 11, they seem more than ready for a holiday (tiredness etc) after a six week half term, let alone the periods when we have a 7 or 8 week half-term. Teachers too seem more than ready for a break, exhaustion (as shown by absence levels at end of long terms). Not sure how you cope with the longer terms it looks like you have. 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 We all definitely get exhausted with the long work periods. Teachers, students and even the parents need more frequent breaks. Your way of doing breaks makes more sense in this way. The one thing we have to deal with is hot summers with many schools not having adequate or no air conditioning. It's hard to learn and teach when you are burning up. 5y
Andrew65 @JaclynW That has been come more of an issue for us too with one or two Hot summers and lack of air conditioning. I always feel six weeks is the maximum for effectiveness before a break. 5 weeks would be even better. The children are worked hard with the onerous demands in the current curriculum. 5y
JaclynW @Andrew65 Exactly! The demands on our curriculum have increased as well. 5y

Belfast 1985, Sean Duffy is a Catholic cop in the Ulster Protestant police force. Murder and suicide leads to MI5 and Americans in arms deal. Cynical, dark, and very satisfying!

Book 4 of the sean duffy series is another cracking police procedural set in 1980's Belfast at the height of the troubles. Dark humour, excellent plotting, and constant political machinations make these books great reads. In this book duffy investigates an apparent straight forward domestic murder and suicide which quickly brings into play l poltical heavy hitters in all senses of the word with echoes of the contra affair. Pic is of a sleepy dog.

Andrew65 This is a series I need to get to. 7y

Fifth in The Troubles series. I'm surprised by how much I've enjoyed the books as, going by blurb, I shouldn't like them! McKinty is a really good writer, knows how to create atmosphere. This is possibly the only book of the series that can be read as a standalone, but I recommend starting from book one. Audiobooks read by that superb narrator Gerard Doyle
