In Search of the Perfect Loaf
In Search of the Perfect Loaf: A Home Baker's Odyssey | Samuel Fromartz
9 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
"An invaluable guide for beginning bakers." Sam Sifton, The New York Times In 2009, journalist Samuel Fromartz was offered the assignment of a lifetime: to travel to France to work in a boulangerie. So began his quest to hone not just his homemade baguettewhich later beat out professional bakeries to win the Best Baguette of D.C.but his knowledge of bread, from seed to table. For the next four years, Fromartz traveled across the United States and Europe, perfecting his sourdough in California, his whole grain rye in Berlin, and his country wheat in the South of France. Along the way, he met historians, millers, farmers, wheat geneticists, sourdough biochemists, and everyone in between, learning about the history of breadmaking, the science of fermentation, and more. The result is an informative yet personal account of bread and breadbaking, complete with detailed recipes, tips, and beautiful photographs. Entertaining and inspiring, this book will be a touchstone for a new generation of bakers and a must-read for anyone who wants to take a deeper look at this deceptively ordinary, exceptionally delicious staple: handmade bread. From the Hardcover edition.

My amazing friend got me this gorgeous book box called Bookmarks n Breadsticks for my birthday. It‘s a quarter box that gives you a book on food (not a cookbook) and one kitchen kit. This one is for making loaves of bread. I think I‘m definitely going to have to get this in the future. It‘s the perfect box for me!

robinb Nice!! 5y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Love that idea! That would make a good swap theme. 5y
Daisey That looks like an awesome box! I‘ve also read this book and it was incredibly interesting if you‘re seriously interested in bread. 5y
Schnoebs @Daisey I‘ve read the back and it seems so good! It‘s definitely a book right up my alley 😍 5y

Pickpick

I finished this fascinating book along with slices of homemade bread. I didn't grow and grind my own grains, but I did use my own sourdough and blended a few flours to make a loaf I love. I'm more appreciative of that experience and more likely to try other techniques thanks to this book. It's a story of the author's journey to learn about all aspects of bread, from the variety of grain to kneading and baking techniques.

Daisey Just to be clear, this is not a cookbook, although it includes a few recipes. It is a story of personal exploration and learning that shares information about all aspects of bread. That includes the genetic history of wheat and varieties of grains used through history, diversity of sourdough cultures, specially built wood fire ovens, various mixing and shaping techniques, etc. It is for readers who are serious about bread! 🌾🔥🥖 9y

I'm disappointed to be staying home due to icy weather instead of visiting my family this weekend, so I'm going to work on various household chores, read more of this book, and make some bread. It's taking me a long time to get through, but only because I keep getting distracted by other books. I really am intrigued by the different methods and information he writes about.

I wasn't expecting these two books to intersect in any way, but in what I've read and listened to yesterday and today both have discussed health aspects of different types of flour. Yong discusses the differences in digestive microbiomes depending at least somewhat on the types of flours and thus quantity of fiber eaten. Fromartz also discusses the fiber level and nutrient value of whole grain flour vs. white flour.

I ended the night with more of this book that I'm very slowly working my way through, along with my tea flavored cookies. Just checked my stats and realized that in addition to 3 completed books for the day, I finished my A to Z author challenge for the year!!

#readathon #ReadandEat

bmsddk Congratulations!! 👏😄 Also, those cookies look amazing! 9y
Jinjer Those cookies!!!! Do u have a recipe? 9y
Daisey @Jinjer I think the only adjustment I made to the recipe was to use all of the tea from a single tea bag. Also, I think these have a little more tea flavor the second day. http://devour-blog.com/2014/03/05/london-fog-sugar-cookies/ 9y
Jinjer Thank you!!! They sound as good as they look! 9y

Reviewsbylola I am interested in Illuminae. Seems cool even though it is not something I would typically read. 9y
Daisey @Reviewsbylola It completely ended up in my library stack due to posts I saw here on Litsy! 9y
LizzyM So I loved! Illuminae and it is definitely not my normal kind of read (I don't read much YA or scifi). But I just had so much fun reading it. Can't wait for the next to come out later this year. 9y

No beach reads here, but the creek is my peaceful outdoor reading spot today! This book about different techniques for making bread is fascinating, and I will definitely be trying some of them.

Gezemice Beautiful! 9y
Daisey @Gezemice Thank you! It's one of my favorite places, and I don't get to spend much time there anymore. 9y

My pick for the #ReadHarder Challenge food memoir is starting perfectly. This is much the way I feel about bread baking.
