In 1933, what's left of the Turner family--twelve-year-old Hallie and her two brothers--finds itself driving the back roads of rural America. The children have been swept up into a new migratory way of life. America is facing two devastating crises: the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. Hundreds of thousands of people in cities across the country have lost jobs. In rural America it isn't any better as crops suffer from the never-ending drought. Driven by severe economic hardship, thousands of people take to the road to seek whatever work they can find, often splintering fragile families in the process. As the Turner children move from town to town, searching for work and trying to cobble together the basic necessities of life, they are met with suspicion and hostility. They are viewed as outsiders in their own country. Will they ever find a place to call home? New York Times-bestselling author Sandra Dallas gives middle-grade readers a timely story of young people searching for a home and a better way of life.

This story warmed my heart. These children were so strong, honest and resourceful. Family and home meant the world to them. I got very attached. This book won the Spur award for Juvenile Fiction in 2020. #100YEARS100BOOKS #64 #BookSpinBingo #14 #BFC21 #BUZZWORDATHON - Home

Three siblings make their way from Oklahoma to Kansas amidst The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, and loss. Sandra Dallas can be counted on for solid western historical fiction, whether middle grade or adult.

Remember all those dear characters in 'Little House on the Prairie' and how they suffered through so many hard times without losing hope, resilience, or kindness? That's who the three main characters in this book remind me of. The young orphans try to find a place that they can find acceptance and a sense of belonging. A good historical fiction book for younger readers.

Dusted out of Oklaholma, losing family and home, 3 siblings hit the road dreaming of a better life in California. Along the way you'll admire their resilience, their strength, integrity and kindness as they deal with prejudice and differences. This book will pull your heartstrings.
