My Eyes Are Up Here

Insightful, frank, and funny, My Eyes Are Up Here is a razor-sharp debut about a teenage girl struggling to rediscover her sense of self in the year after her body decided to change all the rules. A "monomial" is a simple algebraic expression consisting of a single term. 30H, for example. 15-year-old Greer Walsh hasn't been fazed by basic algebra since fifth grade, but for the last year, 30H has felt like an unsolvable equation--one that's made her world a very small, very lonely place. 30H is her bra size--or it was the last time anyone checked. She stopped letting people get that close to her with a tape measure a while ago. Ever since everything changed the summer before ninth grade, Greer has felt out of control. She can't control her first impressions, the whispers that follow, or the stares that linger after. The best she can do is put on her faithful XXL sweatshirt and let her posture--and her expectations for other people--slump. But people--strangers and friends--seem strangely determined to remind her that life is not supposed to be this way. Despite carefully avoiding physical contact and anything tighter than a puffy coat, Greer finds an unexpected community on the volleyball squad, the team that hugs between every point and wears a uniform "so tight it can squeeze out tears." And then there's Jackson Oates, newly arrived at her school and maybe actually more interested in her banter than her breasts. Laura Zimmermann's debut is both laugh-out-loud funny and beautifully blunt, vulnerable and witty, heartbreaking and hopeful. And it will invite readers to look carefully at a girl who just wants to be seen for all she is.

I really enjoyed this book for so many reasons. It was a really quick read with great characters and a powerful message. This reminded me a bit of Dumplin‘ because it really focused on body image issues and how to gain confidence when you don‘t look like everyone else. It also really shows that perfect is boring and being different can be frustrating, but a good thing all the same. I definitely would recommend this one!

Next on the TBR pile.

AutumnRLS Ok. Weird critique, but the margins are too close to the edge of the page and it's distracting. Lol. Otherwise, this book starts off immediately relatable and I love the 1st person POV's voice. 4y
AutumnRLS As a woman who has always been uncomfortable with the size of her chest, this book is hitting me right in the feelings. 4y

For the most part, I loved this book. Body positivity & being comfortable with your body is important & is NEEDED for all. However, it is not body positivity and not ok to exoticize large breasts. I think this book is a great step in the right direction to the discussion and importance about body positivity. But, there are a few concerning themes within that could have been dealt with differently. Link to a great GR review with similar concerns ⬇️

Emily92Bibliophile To echo the writer of the above GR review, I wouldn‘t recommend it to a teen who has body insecurity. I am very interested in looking for YA fiction books on body positivity and acceptance to add to the HS library 4y

Greer is ashamed of her body-aren‘t we all? Her reason is she has very large breasts. She is uncomfortable and self conscious. She does everything she can to hide under baggie clothes. This is a wonderfully written story about body image, self-acceptance and finding your self-worth. It is about fierce female friendships. I loved this book so much and can‘t recommend it enough. Amazing debut and I can‘t wait to read more from this author. So good!

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick This sounds like my cousin. I wonder if I can get her to read this... 4y
JoScho @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I was the same way in high school. I actually had a breast reduction the summer I graduated high school. I connected with this book in a major way and think it would be helpful for anyone feeling that way. 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick Maybe I'll get this then & share it. Poor girl is like her mother, needing a specially sized bra. Her mom is a bigger woman, very self-conscious, and covered herself up. I think some of that thinking rubbed off on my cousin. She's gotten a little more relaxed, but it still bothers her. I sympathize with some of it, but a D cup isn't too large and I've never been shy about "the girls". ? 4y
JoScho I really think it would be perfect for her. Greer, the MC, talks about not being able to buy pretty bras with her friends and ordered plain ugly bras online. Since I was that girl in high school it really hit home for me. Plus it deals with her boobs being an issue but it also just a great story. Let me know if she ends up reading it. Also her girls are named Maude and Mavis 😂 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick (edited) 4y
