The I Hate to Cook Book
The I Hate to Cook Book: 50th Anniversary Edition | Peg Bracken
6 posts | 4 read | 6 to read
"There are two kinds of people in this world: the ones who don't cook out of and have NEVER cooked out of THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK, and the other kind...The I HATE TO COOK people consist mainly of those who find other things more interesting and less fattening, and so they do it as seldom as possible. Today there is an Annual Culinary Olympics, with hundreds of cooks from many countries ardently competing. But we who hate to cook have had our own Olympics for years, seeing who can get out of the kitchen the fastest and stay out the longest." - Peg Bracken Philosopher's Chowder. Skinny Meatloaf. Fat Man's Shrimp. Immediate Fudge Cake. These are just a few of the beloved recipes from Peg Bracken's classic I HATE TO COOK BOOK. Written in a time when women were expected to have full, delicious meals on the table for their families every night, Peg Bracken offered women who didn't revel in this obligation an alternative: quick, simple meals that took minimal effort but would still satisfy. 50 years later, times have certainly changed - but the appeal of THE I HATE TO COOK BOOK hasn't. This book is for everyone, men and women alike, who wants to get from cooking hour to cocktail hour in as little time as possible.

Between a pick and a so-so, I probably won‘t make many of the recipes but Bracken is very funny. Full review at http://booknaround.blogspot.com/2018/08/review-I-hate-to-cook-book-by-peg.html

Poking through my books and I found this. Ironic since I actually do like to cook. Off to see if any of the recipes are worth making.

I am a day behind because life was a little rough yesterday, but here goes. I am a terrible cook. Really. And I HATE cooking. But I still have a super weird obsession with cookbooks and cooking shows. I know exactly when the contestants on Chopped should make a fumet, and when they are adding too much salt, but somehow, it never really comes together when I try to do it. #cookbooklove #photoadaynov16

RealLifeReading Haha great picture! Oh I love cooking shows especially the Great British Bakeoff! 8y

#booksthatmademehungary #somethingforsept. Cooking is not my thing so even though I have a cupboard full of cookbooks these are two of the three I've actually used.

[DELETED] 3558467437 Same! I bought a cook book called The Absolute Beginners Cook Book when I first got married and I still use recipes from that book. 🍽 8y
Suzze I remember when The I Hate To Cook book came out, my mother (who hated cooking) used some of the recipes. 8y
Dragon @Currysunshine sometimes I find it best to stick with what works. I still use my Betty Crocker New Boys and Girls Cook Book for my spaghetti 🍝😃 8y
Dragon @Suzze an older friend used to have me over for dinner and she used recipes from I Hate to Cook . So I spent years looking for the exact copy at the used booksale. Boy did I let out a shriek of delight when I found it 🎉 8y
Suzze @Dragon I might even have a copy myself! I'll have to look through my old cookbook box. 8y

Fun Photo Friday: I come back to this over and over. I adored it as a child. I cooked from it in college. It's the only book I took on my first career burnout solo beach vacation. Sometimes I would read it to my kids at bedtime. It calms me down. It cheers me up. I cant explain it.

Mayread My favorite cook book as youngster was "Yum, Yum, I will be My Own Cook." It taught French cooking basics to kids. 8y
SusanInTiburon @Skiles That sounds great. I love children's cookbooks. 8y
Suzze I haven't seen that book in a gazillion years. 8y
Jess_Read_This Omigosh, this looks like a neat book and I love your story about it! 8y
Dragon Dr.Martin's Mix is my favourite recipe from this book 8y
