'another breathtaking page-turner from the author of CALL ME EVIE' - Christian White, bestselling author of The Nowhere Child HOW FAR WOULD YOU GO TO PROTECT YOUR FAMILY? Amy has only ever known life in the Clearing. She knows what's expected of her. She knows what to do to please her elders, and how to make sure the community remains happy and calm. That is, until a new young girl joins the group. She isn't fitting in; she doesn't want to stay. What happens next will turn life as Amy knows it on its head. Freya has gone to great lengths to feel like a 'normal person'. In fact, if you saw her go about her day with her young son, you'd think she was an everyday mum. That is, until a young girl goes missing and someone from her past, someone she hasn't seen for a very long time, arrives in town. As secrets of the past bubble up to the surface, this small town's dark underbelly will be exposed and lives will be destroyed. PRAISE FOR IN THE CLEARING: 'Past and present collide in this taut and unpredictable thriller ... Twist follows twist and nothing is as it seems.' - Chris Hammer, bestselling author of Scrublands 'A chilling depiction of the ferocious hold exerted by a cult and its adherents. This is totally absorbing fiction, made all the more shocking by the realisation that these stories recur again and again in Australian society.' - Jock Serong, author of The Rules of Backyard Cricket and Preservation 'J.P. Pomare captivates in this haunting novel, In the Clearing. I was utterly gripped with the stories of Amy and Freya from start to finish, and fascinated by the unexpected way the two came together ... A sure-fire bestseller. Sally Hepworth, bestselling author of The Mother-In-Law and The Family Next Door

I‘m not sure why I can‘t pass up a novel featuring cults, but it‘s a sub-genre that always draws me in! Plus, I just love an audiobook set in Australia! With a great audio performance, I found myself listening to this one at every chance! With layers of twists, some are more successful than others. I saw a few coming, but the final one definitely had me gasping out loud enough to give my dog a little scare of his own! Excited for more from Pomare!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Good thing Australia is so rich in crime writers, if you enjoy the setting 😊 2d
TorieStorieS @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Yes! I think it is because I just love Caroline Lee— she‘s an absolutely fantastic audiobook performer! Are there any Australian thrillers you particularly recommend? 2d
CoffeeK8 Have you read this one? Not set in Australia but good and creepy 1d

TorieStorieS @CoffeeK8 Wow— never even heard of this one but it is on my list now!! Thank you!!😊 1d
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @TorieStorieS, thrillers aren‘t my genre (so these might lean more towards crime/mystery) but I‘d recommend Margaret Hickey, Garry Disher, Candice Fox, Peter Temple & Jane Caro. 1d
TorieStorieS @CoffeeK8 just purchased it! 🥳 1d
TorieStorieS @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Wow!! Thanks for the recommendations!! I‘m checking them out now!! 🥰🥰 1d

It was a quick read overall. I haven‘t read Pomare‘s previous work Call Me Evie, which was on my TBR list @ 1 point. I‘m not really a fan of stories involving cults, so it‘s not surprising that I gave this one 3 out of 5 stars. I didn‘t really care for the characters. There was a disconnect for me. I enjoyed the Australian setting though. I think I‘m still going to read Call Me Evie & check out his future work. Hopefully not more about cults lol

This was a slow burn, then really good, a bit predictable, THEN I was let down, finally realized I was wrong to be let down. Would recommend!

This was really good. Do you ever really escape a cult? I can't explain this property without spoilers. Based on a charismatic cult leader in Australia, the most successful female cult leader, this book will make you question everything.

And that gross white stuff in the background of my photo is snow. In October. So gross.

TheDaysGoBy This sounds right up my alley! I‘ve always had an interest in cults 5y

Cults, cults, cults. I don‘t know how to write a review of this that won‘t spoil it for future readers so I‘ll just say it blew me away. If cults and crimes are your jam, get in there.

CaliforniaCay Love the mug!😍 5y
