Vera Kelly Is Not a Mystery
Vera Kelly Is Not a Mystery | Rosalie Knecht
13 posts | 10 read | 7 to read
When ex-CIA agent Vera Kelly loses her job and her girlfriend in a single day, she reluctantly goes into business as a private detective. Heartbroken and cash-strapped, she takes a case that dredges up dark memories and attracts dangerous characters from across the Cold War landscape. Before it's over, she'll chase a lost child through foster care and follow a trail of Dominican exiles to the Caribbean. Forever looking over her shoulder, she nearly misses what's right in front of her: her own desire for home, connection, and a new romance at the local bar.In this exciting second installment of the Vera Kelly series, Rosalie Knecht challenges and deepens the Vera we love: a woman of sparkling wit, deep moral fiber, and martini-dry humor who knows how to follow a case even as she struggles to follow her heart.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
As I said back August when I read book 1, I don‘t know when or why this series was added to my tbr, but I am really glad - it‘s a hidden gem for sure! Lacking the glitz, glam, and big drama of usual spy stories, Vera is a normal person handling abnormal situations, which at times can make it seem mundane, but not boring, and makes the moments of suspense even more intense.
Definitely looking forward to book 3 and other works by Knecht.

I enjoyed this more than I enjoyed the first book in the series - you feel like you are allowed to know Vera a bit better than in the first one. But the actual mystery/peril in this is a bit patchy - I felt like some things were picked up and dropped very quickly and the actual resolution was very, very fast. Would read more of Vera on the basis of this one for sure. Also the cover is gorgeous.

I was so excited to find out there was a second book. I loved the quietness of the first one and this one as well. Hot and tense. Loved it.

In 2018's "Who is Vera Kelly?" Vera was abandoned by the CIA in Argentina. Now she's lost her job and girlfriend in the same day and decides to work as a private investigator (and you know I love that kind of thing!) She gets wrapped up in cold-war Dominican intrigue with dictators, missing children, and social workers.

Read it for #pridemonth or just because secret agents are fun. The book comes out June 16 from tin house

rachelm I am obsessed with this series! I loved both books so much 5y
ReadingEnvy @rachelm it's a lot of fun. I love how it's a shout out to philip Marlowe type detectives but with a twist 5y
Centique Ok I just put Who is Vera Kelly? on hold at the library. Don‘t tell the stack of books sitting on my bedside table, or the books overflowing from the shelf in my wardrobe that probably wasn‘t intended to be a bookshelf.... 😂 5y

Yes yes yes yes yes. Read this (but read the first book — Who is Vera Kelly? first.) I was thrilled to get this arc which is the perfect combo of spy/noir/historical fic. Coming this summer!

Best kind of Saturday night. I‘m almost done with this ARC and loving it! Mystery, boarding school, political drama...

#weeklyforecast is looking awesome! Really enjoying Todd Dillard‘s new poetry collection (he‘s amazing) and just started Little Friend this AM on audio.

The tagged book is an ARC I couldn‘t wait to finally get to open. I hope to have a review up for it this week!

I like the unusual choice of a female ex-CIA-turned-PI, and i appreciated the realistic depiction of how persecuted women in general were at this time, but particularly queer women. Pulpy, but entertaining well-written pulp. I received an ARC from #netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

BarbaraBB Scary, the blooming... 5y
REPollock @BarbaraBB very scary, and it‘s going to be 28 degrees this weekend so they‘ll all freeze. 🙁 5y
