All the Way to America
All the Way to America: The Story of a Big Italian Family and a Little Shovel | Dan Yaccarino
5 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
This is the story of four generations of an Italian American family. It begins with an immigrant who came through Ellis Island with big dreams, a small shovel, and his parents' good advice: "Work hard, but remember to enjoy life, and never forget your family." Now, many years later, the man's great-grandson, Dan Yaccarino, tells how he succeeded, and how the little shovel has been passed from father to sonalong with the good advice. It's a story that captures the experience of so many American families. One that will have kids asking their parents and grandparents, where did we come from? Tell me our story.

Teacher could use this to study different cultures in their beliefs or open up conversation about immigration. This book supplies, a decent understanding on what is needed to immigrate to America. Teacher could ask students where they would immigrate to and why?

This B book follows an Italian family from their roots in Italy to America. This is an amazing book that highlights family lineage when immigrating. For 2nd grade students, I believe a SR strategy would work well while using UDL Principle 2.1: clarifying vocabulary and symbols.

gpraytor Including ESOL Strategy 15: reinforce the key ideas you present again & again. This is useful because this book has major themes that tie to the key idea. 4y
gpraytor This link is chock-full of ideas on implementation and lessons for grades 1-5. https://www.teachingbooks.net/tb.cgi?tid=22641 4y
DrSpalding This would be an excellent book to use in a second grade social studies unit on immigration. Excellent choice and helpful resource. 4y

#AbbaInAugust Day 28: I suppose all new immigrants‘ battlecry is: #TakeAChanceOnMe. In what Dan Yaccarino claims to be his most personal work to date, he shares the story of his great grandfather Michele Iaccarino who grew up on a farm in Sorrento, Italy. While this is distinctly Dan Yaccarino‘s family story, this can also be anyone‘s tale of migration, with the opportunities beckoning on the horizon. My full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-cij
