Rage Against the Dying
Rage Against the Dying: A Thriller | Becky Masterman
13 posts | 19 read | 8 to read
You have never met an (ex) FBI agent like Brigid Quinn "Keeping secrets, telling lies, they require the same skill. Both become a habit, almost an addiction, that's hard to break even with the people closest to you, out of the business. For example, they say never trust a woman who tells you her age; if she can't keep that secret, she can't keep yours. I'm fifty-nine." Brigid Quinn's experiences in hunting sexual predators for the FBI have left her with memories she wishes she didn't have and lethal skills she hopes never to need again. Having been pushed into early retirement by events she thinks she's put firmly behind her, Brigid keeps telling herself she is settling down nicely in Tucson with a wonderful new husband, Carlo, and their dogs. But the past intervenes when a man named Floyd Lynch confesses to the worst unsolved case of Brigid's careerthe disappearance and presumed murder of her young protge, Jessica. Floyd knows things about that terrible night that were never made public, and offers to lead the cops to Jessica's body in return for a plea bargain. It should finally be the end of a dark chapter in Brigid's life. Except...the new FBI agent on the case, Laura Coleman, thinks the confession is fake, and Brigid finds she cannot walk away from violence and retribution after all, no matter what the cost. With a fiercely original and compelling voice, Becky Masterman's Rage Against the Dying marks the heart-stopping debut of a brilliant new thriller writer.

In an effort to clear the kindle I picked this 2013 buy. it‘s a solid if perhaps unecesssrily complex murder mystery set in the Arizona desert. Narrated by Bridget Quinn in the first person its the story of a somewhat disgraced, early retired FBI agent and the case that got away. Bridget is frankly infuriating but also kind of awesome and it was interesting to have a slightly older protagonist. Apparently now there are also another 3!

#2022Book2
The mystery part of this novel was pretty good and the identity of the killer wasn't revealed (or obvious) too early. But some of the decisions made by the main character were so stupid that I found it difficult to believe she was a former FBI special agent.

#62 let‘s keep the morbid dice rolling lol let‘s see if this one is a better read than that last one.

Caffeinated_Reader Well that was a pretty awesome story. Brigid is a freaking savage. I‘d like to read more about her. That other cop, “snow” huge set of balls too that one. Over all I enjoyed this investigation into finding the serial killers. I‘d definitely read more from this new to me author! 6y

Enjoying on the porch. It's 80. It's Feb. it's NC. My daughter is jealous and snowed in at college in Massachusetts.

I thought that this book would build on how the main character has to assert herself for example against sexism or ageism in a male dominated environment or at least a more complex main character but that was not the case. It works ok as a thriller but is not what I expected and I feel like an opportunity was wasted...

For a year I gave retirement my best shot. I joined a book club, but the other women started ignoring me when they found out I never read the book.

Anna40 Why are book clubs always considered to be boring and for senior citizens or women only? 8y

Heard about this book on the radio! Love the idea that the 'detective' is a 60 year old retired FEMALE FBI agent! :)

Not as good as I was hoping it would be. Took a long while to get into it. Seemed to have a lot of running around and not really getting anywhere. I wasn't as invested in this read, and didn't really connect with the main character as much as I hoped I would. When the action kicked in, and the story started to move, then it got interesting, and I couldn't put it down.

Someone isn't happy I have another book handy... but he doesn't mind curling up beside me while I read. 😍

Finished #24in48 last night with 17:35! Not too shabby for my first time out. It was so fun to devote big chunks of time to reading over two days. (Probably helped that the kiddo was building LEGOs all weekend! 😉)

Finished off by starting this thriller recommended by Nancy Pearl. So far, it's gruesomely terrific.
