In Dianne Freemans charming Victorian-era mystery series, Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, finds her sisters wedding threatened by a vow of vengeance. London is known for its bustle and intrigues, but the sedate English countryside can hostor hideany number of secrets. Frances, the widowed Countess of Harleigh, needs a venue for her sister Lilys imminent wedding, away from prying eyes. Risings, George Hazletons family estate in Hampshire, is a perfect choice, and soon Frances, her beloved George, and other guests have gathered to enjoy the usual country pursuitsshooting, horse riding, and romantic interludes in secluded gardens. But the bucolic setting harbors a menace, and its not simply the arrival of Francess socially ambitious mother. Above and below stairs, mysterious accidents befall guests and staff alike. Before long, Frances suspects these accidents are deliberate, and fears that the intended victim is Lilys fianc, Leo. Francess mother is unimpressed by Lilys groom-to-be and would much prefer that Lily find an aristocratic husband, just as Frances did. But now that Frances has found happiness with Georgea man who loves her for much more than her dowryshe heartily approves of Lilys choice. If she can just keep the couple safe from villains and meddling mamas. As Frances and George search for the culprit among the assembled family, friends, and servants, more victims fall prey to the mayhem. Mishaps become full-blooded murder, and it seems that no one is safe. And unless Frances can quickly flush out the culprit, the peal of wedding bells may give way to another funeral toll. . . .

Enjoy this series. Liked seeing the family together and watching MC interact with her mother. Enjoyed her defense of her sister‘s marital prospects in the face of their mom‘s aspirations for them.

I quite adore this series of cosy murders, the MC is an absolutely darling and her family is wonderfully dysfunctional (her mother's character development in this one was *chef's kiss*) and the veeeeery gentle sprinkle of romance is just right.

I think this book is great. Follows along the story arc with family coming over from America. And a bit of murder. And injury. Overall a pick!

SW-T Enjoyable series. Read first two and this one‘s on my TBR. 4y

Day 2 of #20Series20Days #Top20Series

*And review of latest book*

The absolute BRILLIANCE of this is the characters. They are some of my faves from any literary world. This series= the pure definition of cozy mystery! It just makes life happier for a while. American heiress Francis and her partner in crime Mr Hazelton help solve crimes and go on adventures in Victorian England. While I wished for a bit more story progression in this new one ⬇️

HOTPock3tt It was still quite humorous and fun! With a little whodunnit mystery and some nice romantic entanglements thrown in!! I am very much looking forward to the next one! I‘m on board for as long as she wishes to write about these fabulous characters! ♥️🤗 (edited) 4y
sprainedbrain I will read this someday!! 4y
SW-T Enjoyed the first two books and have the tagged on my TBR. 😊 4y

Book 3 closes the dramatic arc started in books 1 and 2. On its own it lacks context for the new reader but as part of the whole series, Freeman waves a plot and character development faithfully in synch with the previous books. She gives depth to all her characters, female and male, principal or secondary characters. Characters that would be only plot point have shades. #netgalley #historical #cozymystery #arc

writerlibrarian The relationships: romantic, between sisters, mother and daughters, friends are so on point and surprises the reader in a few instances in a really nice twist. I like this light, comfort historical cozy mystery series. Freeman has created a corner of Gilded Age/Victorian England where Frances, Countess of Harleigh has spread her wings, stood on her feet after an arranged marriage and a cad of a dead husband. 4y
writerlibrarian The only weak point is that this is not a stand alone book. You need to read the first two to get the full impacts of the plot and the characters‘ journey but you will not regret entering this journey. 4y

I have mixed feelings about this one. Third in series, I need to go back and read the previous two to flesh out characters more. The writing was good (humorous, descriptive), but I had an issue with the pacing. The book felt too long for 250 pgs. The multiple “accidents” were not deemed more sinister until halfway through and by then I had lost some interest. The prior books both had good reviews so I feel I should go back at some point and ⬇️

I didn't realise I hadn't read the series before, but I was able to jump right in without much confusion. Overall, I enjoyed the book, but thought it took accidents and coincidences a bit too far. Also, I could never shake my slight annoyance at the heroine. I'd recommend this to some friends, but I'm not sure that I care to read the previous books, not would I want to continue with the series.
