The reluctant reader | Aidan Chambers
post image

Hey guys,

As part of my tutoring business I am starting up a "reluctant readers" book club which will look at a book a month and their film/tv adaptations. I'm looking for books for the next 3 months appropriate for the above age groups. For October I'm feeling "horror-y" but I'm open to any and all suggestions! I'd especially love books that touch on themes my kids will really be able to engage with.

Thanks!

AbigailJaneBlog To clarify: these don't have to be novels! I'm happy with non-fic, poetry, comics/GN's 2w
dylanisreading For horror-y middle grade, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz (a classic) paired with the 2019 adaptation of the same name, which is good. There's also the Goosebumps books and their TV adaptation. 2w
AbigailJaneBlog @dylanisreading that's amazing, thank you! I really don't do horror so I'm a little out of the loop 😅 2w
dylanisreading @AbigailJaneBlog No problem! For horror for your group 2, I'd recommend There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins and its Netflix adaptation (though, disclaimer, I haven't watched the movie yet 🤣). I'll let you know if any other horror pairings occur to me. 2w
AbigailJaneBlog @dylanisreading yes that one came up in my research, thank you! 2w

I finished my MA dissertation this week.
Unfortunately to do so, I have been on a restricted reading schedule this month - I haven't finished a single book!! 😲😭

I'm looking forward to recyifying that with @Andrew65 's #20in4 readathon! My goals? READ. That is all.

Omg guys, this book.
Think Cerulean Sea but about witches and you've got this story - it's beautiful and funny and full of love. Genuinely uplifting and hopeful but not unrealistically so. The romance evolved well, as did all of the relationships in the book. Mika is a great FMC who insists on talking through problems and addresses her trauma. I also loved the little sections we got from other POVs 5⭐️ released 23/08/22

Posting my #JubilantJuly round up now as I'm currently in A&E and don't see myself reading much more before tomorrow.

Okay so I stated off hating this but pushed through for the sake of #LGBTbookclub and now I'm loving it? The story is great I just wish there had been some editting because boy does this book need it. Hopefully this will turn out to be a soft pick, but that will heavily depend on the ending.

@thereadingpal

Nutmegnc Yeah, I liked it but I felt it would have been better if it were shorter and tighter. 3mo
AbigailJaneBlog @Nutmegnc agreed. There were just so many places where she was overly wordy it really pulled me out of it. Plus my pet hate is describing people as having "British accents" because that just isn't a thing! ?? 3mo

#BFC2022

June went surprisingly well for me. I read LOTS of queer stories and ate high folic foods more often. The uni draft isn't finished yet but that is due to ongoing medical complications.

Due to said complications, I'll have to be similarly chill with my July goals:
- High Folic foods 5/week
- Read at least 2 fairyloot books
- Tidy 1/week

I had a real focus on queer stories this month, and these are a selection of the books I read - all of them absolutely brilliant, but my favourite without a doubt is the tagged, Lightning Struck Heart. Funny, endearing and hopeful, as I've come to expect from TJ Klune. The rest were all great in their own ways, thoroughly enjoyed them all! I'll be posting another with a range of other queer stories I've read this month.

Like many others, I found May... odd. I didn't stick to any of my goals, but I think that's because my health is still a little wobbly and I was in a huge reading slump for the first half of the month.
For June, I'm going to change my goals completely to give myself a little do-over:
1. Read a range of LGBTQIA+ stories
2. Finish my dissertation draft
3. Eat folic-rich foods every day

Read this for #foodandlit and it definitely fit the prompt - Greece was very much an extra character within the story. However, the story itself was lacking. I would have liked it much more if the author had gone into their relationship a little more - it felt very passing and shallow. Also there was definite xenophobia, particularly against Albanians? Idk but it was a no from me.

Texreader I‘ve picked up on that feeling about Albanians in other books about Greece. Must be a local thing. I‘m hoping it‘s a friendly rivalry, like Norway (husband is Norwegian) and Sweden. Or our biggest college football teams in Texas. They love to bash the other. 7mo
