The Hawthornes have it all. Great jobs, a beautiful house in northern California, and three charming daughters with perfect teeth. And then comes the eldest's senior year of high school. Angela is a straight A student and star athlete with her sights set on Harvard. Except she's suddenly losing her edge. Mother Nora is stretched to the limit between her family and her real-estate career. Then a few ill-advised moves put the Hawthorne family on a heedless collision and course that's equal parts achingly real and delightfully screwball.

Loved the first half then got annoyed with the dialogue being broken up by the random thoughts the character was having. Maybe because I was listening. Just move the plot along! Fulfilled a PopSugar reading challenge. 🎉

I liked this more than I expected, based on commentary from @drbethandherkindle but it was still a very stressful read as this family's life spiraled out of control. #ProjectKindle #12

Cinfhen After living through the whole college admissions process twice dont think I want to read about it 😝 7y
Pamwurtzler @Cinfhen I'm a few years removed from the college process, but I could definitely remember the pain while I was reading this book! 7y
Cinfhen It was a few years for me too, but I'm still emotionally drained🙄 7y

drbethandherkindle I can't even remember what I thought about this book, but I'm guessing it wasn't positive 7y
drbethandherkindle ALSO, @Cinfhen I would just like to add that MY college admissions process was perfectly smooth and to blame all of the stress @Pamwurtzler had on @kitty_reads 7y
Pamwurtzler @drbethandherkindle You told me you didn't like it all that much. 7y
Pamwurtzler Also @drbethandherkindle , your college admission process was plenty stressful. Believe me when I tell you. 7y
drbethandherkindle I just had to go look it up on Goodreads and I still only vaguely remember it. Wasn't it full of people making bad choices? 7y
Pamwurtzler @drbethandherkindle yes, pretty much. That sometimes makes me crazy. 7y
Egallagher713 Halfway through and love it so far I think because I can remember the craziness of college admissions with my own kids 7y

I wasn't sure I'd be interested in this book club pick but it was actually a super quick read! Its kind of a less dark Everything I Never Told You. A family with an oldest daughter trying to get into Harvard where everyone is just really stressed out with all the pressures of trying to have it all. Everyone has a secret/issue and I was just waiting to see how it all shook out. I enjoyed the multiple POVs and the resolution!

I read this book when it came out and really enjoyed it! If you liked The Nest, give this one a try! The characters are generally more likable, though they are indeed steeped in privilege. It will also resonate with parents of high schoolers and those who went through the admissions process not too long ago.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I liked this one. 8y

I know opinions on this novel are quite mixed, but I really enjoyed it! If you like family dramedy, this might be for you.

[DELETED] 2232195534 I liked this one too! 8y

Mehso-so

This was 3.5 stars so really it was a bit better than so-so. I like reading about ordinary people in crisis mode and also enjoy multiple voices in telling the story. The plot however was predictable -- good story though. No more secrets in this family, I hope. My oldest is applying to colleges right now so I appreciated the stress that process brings.

[DELETED] 2232195534 Read this one last year and liked it. Also liked one of her earlier books when a bunch of kids came home to stay. 8y
Megabooks I bailed. I found it too predictable. 🙁 8y

A look at what happens when "perfect" people are hiding not-so-perfect secrets. A summer pick ??

Id you're a kid that's applying to college or are a parent of a kid that's applying to college, then this is a must read. Along with Excellent Sheep and Everything I Never Told You.

Bailedbailed

Plot was so boring and predictable, I had to bail. Summary: Families are busy. Sometimes they're so busy, they don't really see what's going on. 👎🏻 💤
