Feet up, a book, and hockey!

I didn't know anything about Laura Lippman before starting this short collection of essays.

Now I know that she's quite accomplished, funny, relatable, and can play a very long game 😄

I felt a little bad DNF‘ing Lady in the Lake, so when my hold came through on this faster than expected, I knew I had to jump on it. I enjoyed the interesting mix of autobiographical essays and insights.

1. My favorite (living) author is local, but I‘d take an overnight flight and an all-day train ride to go to a book festival.
2. No, but it‘s tempting.
3. Around the world cruise.

Laura Lippman is a badass and a woman who loves herself; that is a feminist revolution in and of itself. It's the essence of being a villainess, Lippman has spent her life living and conforming and fighting against the society that tears her and every woman down. She confronts it with razor sharp observation and humor of an intelligent woman and writer. https://onthebl.org/2021/01/19/laura-lippmans-feminist-revolution-in-my-life-as-...

I enjoyed some parts of this, but most of it didn't do much for me. Definitely prefer her fiction writing.

Speaking of David Simon ...

I watched his wife on a “quarantine book talk” last week. She was refreshingly honest and unapologetic about her past, including her first marriage

I loved this. Laura Lippmann is very smart, snarky, and thoughtful, but absolutely refuses to take herself very seriously. Refreshing and welcome entertainment of the highest order.

Laura reads this herself. It‘s quite good. It was interesting too, in case you thought it might be dull.

Started strong and very funny but lost momentum somewhere in the middle. Books of essays are tough. The author and publisher cobble together old and new material, and the result can be uneven and underwhelming. #arc #netgalley
