Going Up the Country
Going Up the Country: When the Hippies, Dreamers, Freaks, and Radicals Moved to Vermont | Yvonne Daley
4 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
Going Up the Country is part oral history, part nostalgia-tinged narrative, and part clear-eyed analysis of the multifaceted phenomena collectively referred to as the counterculture movement in Vermont. This is the story of how young migrants, largely from the cities and suburbs of New York and Massachusetts, turned their backs on the establishment of the 1950s and moved to the backwoods of rural Vermont, spawning a revolution in lifestyle, politics, sexuality, and business practices that would have a profound impact on both the state and the nation. The movement brought hippies, back-to-the-landers, political radicals, sexual libertines, and utopians to a previously conservative state and led us to today's farm to table way of life, environmental consciousness, and progressive politics as championed by Bernie Sanders.

Suet624 @Megabooks @Enchanted_Bibliophile @osma.of.oz I always imagined that was what the system relied on, but I‘d never heard anyone say it out loud. 5y
Bookgirl Ummmm yikes 5y
Hooked_on_books Uhhhhh… 5y
Reggie Hey Sue, how‘s it going? This passage makes me think of a Chuck Palahniuk book I didn‘t finish but they mention that when there is an over abundance of young male energy this secret society starts has always started wars to thin them out. Hope you‘re doing well. 5y
Suet624 @Reggie yikes! Wouldn‘t surprise me. So much dumbfuckery out there. I‘m doing well, thanks. Feel like I‘m in suspended animation. No work, no money coming in, the stimulus package won‘t help me, but I have lots of books and knitting and the grandkids blow me kisses from the street every day. Captain Adorable has been tasked with learning poems to bless me with. So all is well. I hope you are safe and healthy. 5y
Jeg Unbelievable thinking. Glad to see you you have things to keep you happy. ❤️❤️ 5y

Pickpick

Thanks to #bookspin I pulled this off my shelf. I‘m so glad I did. In a 10-year span of time, 1964-1974, thousands of young people moved to Vermont. The locals panicked and the Governor held a press conference to calm their fears. Over that 10 year period of time, the positive changes to the state were significant. Politics, food, social networks, etc. In such a small state, it only requires a few people to create enormous change. 🔽

Suet624 This book also spoke of the kindness of the farmers who taught newcomers how to make it when they might have otherwise failed. I was so proud of this very small state for what we have accomplished over the years. @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 5y
Anna40 Sounds great 5y
Reggie I don‘t know if you ever read the book Arcadia? I think you did..... anyways but these hippies start a commune in the 70‘s and it‘s the Amish who help them out. Also, in zombie apocalypses (apocalypsii? It feels like it should be lol) the Amish do very well. 5y
Suet624 @Reggie definitely read Arcadia. I kind of lived Arcadia. 😂 After reading Arcadia I contacted my old commune buddies to talk with them about it. 5y

“Webb had learned that it wasn‘t just poor kids who had bad teeth due to the high cost of dental care in Vermont, but rather that it was not unusual for Vermont kids to receive false teeth as a graduation present as a way to help them go forward in life.” Webb was one of many who came to Vermont as a student & created change. In this case in 1975 he developed a sliding fee structure for dental care, the Tooth Fairy Program, funded by the state.

Number 20 on my #bookspin list. A local author and a local history lesson. Some of my friends and political rabble rousers are in here and the commune I eventually lived in in Tennessee actually started in Vermont. Thanks to @TheAromaofBooks for giving me the nudge to finally get it off my shelf.

LeahBergen Wait... you lived in a commune?? I think you should write YOUR story! 5y
Lindy @LeahBergen I agree with Leah! Also, is that cover photo showing an example of sheep charming? 5y
Suet624 @LeahBergen Aw shucks, thanks. :) I have a ton of stories from each darn decade of my life but I don't think I'd ever be able to write a story that anyone but my kids might be interested in. And even thinking they might be interested is a stretch. 😂 5y

Suet624 @Lindy Hahaha. “Those crazy hippies.“ 5y
batsy I second @LeahBergen! We'll definitely be keen to read of it 🤩 5y
Cathythoughts I love this ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ 5y
marleed That‘s awesome- or should I say groovy! I‘ve never known anyone that lived in a commune. I would love to hear your tales! ...My brother was a certified/stamped/authorized Conscientious Objector during Vietnam - in all my years, he‘s the only CO I‘d ever known. Quite the nightly dinners as my dad was a WWII vet. 5y
TheAromaofBooks This is really funny because you are the third person so far to say that their #bookspin pick is a local story! Apparently the BookSpin fates decided on a theme 😂 Both this book and your life sound pretty intriguing! 5y
Izai.Amorim I agreee with @LeahBergen , you should write this book! 5y
