This series is one of my favorites! Steamy romance, antiheroes and strong heroines make it so good!

Mina is on the run from her abusive husband that stuck her in an asylum. She‘s hiding out as the governess for the Demon Highlander. As most men in this series - Liam has a bad reputation, but he is just so 🥰He‘s alpha protective and Mina is a smart and strong woman.

Not a big fan of “abuse for the sake of interest” stories and I didn‘t really feel that the author had a firm grasp of how a victim of abuse might react to the physical act of intimacy. Some good parts of this book, but I think this is an example of how we tend to glorify rape culture. I know that some might think that I‘m expecting too much from a romance novel. I personally think that is not the case and we need to be more careful of this issue.

RaimeyGallant Interesting. How did she react? 6y
CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant As though it was a black/white situation. It was fine and then wasn‘t as in she had no real reaction to intimacies with a man until he did one thing that was too similar to her abuser. Maybe this is the case for some women, but many that I know who have had painful experiences do not experience it this way. 6y
RaimeyGallant Many do experience it this way though. I can understand if the author simplified it, but there are many different ways of experiencing life after assault. 6y

CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant but it seemed disingenuous, especially as I can understand someone feeling this way after years have separated them from the experience, but this would be within a matter of days/weeks. 6y
RaimeyGallant Wow. That's a short amount of time. 6y
CarlyQuinn @RaimeyGallant yes, so you can see why I wasn‘t very happy with the plot. 6y
RaimeyGallant I do. 6y
Andrea4 And this is why I tend to stay away from romance...the majority of it keeps putting women "back where they belong" ugh. 6y
CarlyQuinn @Andrea4 I fully agree with you. I have a few authors that I really enjoy who just don‘t sit with that. You‘d be pretty safe reading their books because their female characters are generally very strong: Nora Roberts, Diana Gabaldon, Marsha Canham and Hannah Howell. If I think of more, I‘m let you know. I‘ll be sure to post specific books too that I find have strong female characters. 6y
Andrea4 Awesome! 6y
readinginthedark It‘s interesting that you recommend Diana Gabaldon, though. I‘ve specifically avoided the Outlander series because a friend told me that the characters excuse rape as part of life, especially the main character with her love interest. 6y
Updrifting I write romantic suspense, and I agree with you about being careful with those issues. Especially when intimacy is the point, a reader with that background will be vulnerable. 6y
CarlyQuinn @Updrifting thank you for your thoughts. It really is so important to, especially for this topic, write about either a) what you know (your own experiences) or b) do your research. 6y

Byrne is rapidly becoming one of my (not quite) Regency romance authors! Unique, so-not-cookie-cutter heroines, damaged and dangerous alpha males, spicy romance and a happy ending each time! I loved all three in this series - this one included! #biblioweekend

Another fantastic book from Kerrigan Byrne! I loved the characters, the scenery, the conflict - it made for a thrilling and engrossing tale. I began reading it at the beginning of a five-hour plane ride and was finished before the wheels touched the ground.

I loved both Liam and Mena. Liam had a gentle nature but his childhood affected his temper to where he becomes angry easily. Mena... *Read more on my blog - www.ladywithaquill.com*

Steamy with a good amount of angst. I do love my tortured heroes! And a highlander on top of that?! +100 points 😄

I just started this and I'm intrigued so far. It reminds me of Julie Garwood's highlander books and that's a good thing! The Bride was the first romance I've ever read that turned me into the genre ❤️
