In this alternate history, Lincoln survives Booth‘s bullet but goes on to be impeached (by his own party) for his post-war policies. This primarily follows the senate trial with by far the best character being Abigail, a young black woman who desires to be a lawyer. I wasn‘t sure if I could manage this one going in, not having the stomach for political machinations at the moment, but very quickly I was inventing reasons to keep listening.

This historical fiction novel is the first bit of fiction I‘ve picked up in a long time. In the beginning, the book is a bit tough to get into, but once it gets going it really gets going. Overall, I enjoyed this book and would gladly pick up another story written by Carter.

Started listening to this last night. Looking forward to another Stephan Carter story. ....Didn‘t think this was as good as his 1st and probably would be improved if reduced in bulk. It was a decent read/listen, but not worth me renewing/rechecking out for the end. Still, an interesting “what if. “

FeatherV Aaaahhhh you started using the app! It‘s amazing right? 7y
Mshookquilts @FeatherV , I‘ve been using it since the fire, though I still do cds. Also use Hoopla. 7y

I love an alternate history! This is a chunk of an audiobook, but an interesting “what if”.

Audiobookers, get ready for a superb production. Paul Boehmer is a highly-skilled narrator. Many narrators can fluctuate between age and gender; but Boehmer goes beyond that. Listening, I realized that the "type" for narrators of Carter's novels doesn't always have to be of African descent. Early on, I thought I was listening to "Palace Council" narrator, Mirron Willis. They both excel in transcending dialects and ethnic speech patterns.

BellaBookNook Great analysis. I love when I find great voice talent for audiobooks then I try to find other books they have narrated. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @BellaBookNook -- Thanks, Belinda. And that's exactly what I plan to do -- find more of his projects. Who knows? I just mind find my way into an untapped genre. 8y
BellaBookNook Check out audiofilemagazine.com and you can find more by that voice talent. (edited) 8y
Donna_sBookMinute Thanks for the link, @BellaBookNook. I've landed on the website in the past; but spent a while there just now. It offers a closer look at narrators than you get on Audible. 8y

From the Author's Note:
"I often shove around historical events in my novels. Here, by keeping the sixteenth President on his feet after Booth, I have committed more mayhem than usual. . . . However, let me be crystal clear: this is a work of fiction. . . . Historians rank Lincoln as America's greatest President, and I wholeheartedly agree."

The similarities in setting, character types, historical references, etc, to those in the Elm Harbor series carry over into this #alternativefiction novel by Stephen L. Carter. I knew he would handle it respectfully. Skillful blurring of lines between fact and fiction. Romance is subtly woven throughout the storyline. Edge-of-your-seat impeachment trial setting and dialogue. Surprise ending caught me completely off-guard. #historicalfiction

On firm business, Abigail delivers a parcel to a recent widow:
"She went to the front door, not the back, because she was a clerk from the firm, here on official business. Though she was haunted by the experience of waiting in Senator Fessenden's kitchen for hours, her mother had taught her that, if you once allow your nightmares to hold you back, you will never get moving again. She was determined, therefore, not to let a maid dismiss her."

Donna_sBookMinute This quote is so relatable for me on so many levels. 8y

Reading a favorite author via print and audio. Carter consistently delivers in this alternative account of events surrounding the shooting of Abraham Lincoln. As the title suggests, Lincoln's injuries sustained at the hands of John Wilkes Booth were not fatal. Protagonist Abigail Canner is easy to embrace. #HistoricalFiction

"Abigail was twenty-one years old, and parentless, and black, and expecting, somehow, to affect the course of history."

FINALLY!!! I tried my McMillan but couldn't. She's back on the shelf . . . for now. This one is more suitable since Lincoln's Birthday is coming up. Plan to finish before then. Will alternate between print and audio. Easy commute.

TheNextBook I've tried two McMillans and unfortunately I am not a fan! I feel like all her books permeated my childhood through my mother, so I am highly disappointed. The Impeachment of Abraham Lincoln was pretty good though. I enjoyed it as alternate history historical fiction. 8y
Donna_sBookMinute @thenextboom -- Can't say that I'm a fan either. Guess I was hoping she had grown to my liking. 8y

This title is by one of my favorite authors. It's a departure from the thriller/suspense writing that I've read from him. Don't know why I haven't read it yet. But it's been on my #TBR. I'll get to it. #photoadaynov16. #day8 #politicalfiction #historicalfiction #abrahamlincoln

I am a sucker for alternate history. This look at what may have been if Lincoln had survived the assasination attempt is extremely fascinating. Well imagined and well executed, enjoyable and interesting.

BookBabe @MrBook this could be fun 8y
MrBook Yep. I like alternate histories as long as they don't get too crazy and place modern norms on different times' norms. 8y
TheNextBook @BookBabe @MrBook very realistic perspectives. I was really glad that the perspectives varied so much with different nationalities and backgrounds and how they viewed Lincoln. 8y
MrBook 😁😎👍🏻 8y
