The Diary of Mattie Spenser
The Diary of Mattie Spenser | Sandra Dallas
12 posts | 14 read | 8 to read
No one is more surprised than Mattie Spenser herself when Luke Spenser, considered the great catch of their small Iowa town, asks her to marry him. Less than a month later, they are off in a covered wagon to build a home on the Colorado frontier. Mattie's only company is a slightly mysterious husband and her private journal, where she records the joys and frustrations not just of frontier life, but also of a new marriage to a handsome but distant stranger. As she and Luke make life together on the harsh and beautiful plains, Mattie learns some bitter truths about her husband and the girl he left behind and finds love where she least expects it. Dramatic and suspenseful, this is an unforgettable story of hardship, friendship and survival.

I really enjoyed reading how these characters lived as early settlers of the Colorado territory but this book needs a trigger warning for EVERYTHING. Jeeze Louise, the author put these poor characters through the wringer! So much drama and heartache that I literally shook the book when it was over. Now I have to send this to a friend to read so I'll have someone to rant about it with.😅

Reason #8690457 that Litsy is the best place:

Not 5 minutes after shelving this book from @Wife ‘s post, she had commented back at me, offering to send me the book! Now, less than a week later, it arrives in my mailbox. Thank you for the #bookmail and the kind card! #litsylove

Wife You‘re welcome ❤️ 6y

This is like a gritty version of Little House. Written in diary form. For me, it really had the feels and it gets a very rare 4/5 ⭐️ from me. A quarter well spent at my library used book sale! I think very few women (or men) would be up for the challenge that pioneers faced back in the 1800‘s.

Jabberwocky Not the point but I‘m ridiculously intrigued by 6y

This is historical fiction. It was written in the form of the journal entries of a newly married woman who moved to Colorado Territory from Iowa. The story details some of the hardships involved in starting out in the frontier. The ending is kind of bittersweet. I enjoyed it and look forward to reading more from this author.

Bathtime for little one means more reading time for mommy! Haven't been able to read nearly as much as I'd thought or hoped, but I am into hour 10 somewhere. Enjoying this prairie diary more than I expected.

Such a good book but the ending totally ruined it!

Mattie's young son dies by the fault of her husband, and having a young son of my own, it literally brought me to tears. I don't know how parents were able to cope with such high mortality rates in children long ago. Her husband loves another woman and he risks his baby's life for this other woman and Mattie forgives him!! She had a way out and she stayed! So disappointed. 😢
