Stan and Nan

A graphic memoir to place beside Raymond Briggs' "Ethel & Ernest." My nan wrote me many letters back in 2011. They were about the love of her life, my grandad, Stanley Burndred. I've never met him, he died long before I was born, but his drawings, paintings and ceramics have been in my life for as long as I can remember. Every wall of Nan's house would be decorated by his artworks and every windowsill bore his ceramic creations. Whenever we visited Nan in the Black Country I would study the ornaments and pictures, wondering who had made them. It wasn't until I wrote to Nan many years later, receiving in return beautiful handwritten letters detailing his life, that it became apparent that the work was his. The letters were so beautiful I felt my nan's story had to be told. "Stan and Nan "is the story of an ordinary couple and the people who loved them. The narrative follows their lives from Stan's working-class background, to his premature death, through to Nan's struggle to cope, and the perils of ageing. It is a memoir about the importance of family, and about death, love, living and human connection.

Book 2 for July 2019's #24in48 #readathon. What a lovely, poignant, heartfelt read! Stan and Nan's story was by turns happy and sad, and always thoughtful. This one hit a bit close to home as my Mom is elderly and not as stable as she used to be. I really identified with Nan's daughter and granddaughter. Oomph, hard to read but very well worth it. 4/5⭐️

UwannaPublishme Great review! This would be a tough read for me, too. We‘re halfway there! 🙌🏻 5y

What a sweet little story! Made me cry too, there‘s a lot of similarities between the authors family & mine. My nan also lost her husband at a young age from a heart attack, she never remarried and I was holding her hand as she died. Totally gorgeous novel with a unique drawing style, if you love stories like Our Souls At Night by Kent Haruf then you‘ll enjoy this.

Bk178 Of 2017 is this sweet graphic novel about the authors grandmothers love for her grandad Stan. It‘s so adorable and a little sad, the author, Sarah Lippett never met her grandad, he died before she was born. Her nan loved him so much though she kept him alive in her stories, his artwork and letters.

My last #BookMail before I start #TBRbingo, well except for my pre-order of the new Vera novel. And my #owlcrate. Plus #fairyloot. Then that's it. I promise! Can't wait to read The Stone Sky, Stan and Nan sounds so sweet & the rest have been on my Wishlist for awhile. Better get started on my bingo so I can get to these.📚📚📚📚😱

laurieluna I'm like that 😂 included all my preorders and my fairyloot box in my #tbrbingo so they don't take up any of my free spaces. 7y

See, this is what happens when you combine boredom, money in your debit account & no one home to stop you. It's not as if I have nothing to read, I can't choose which book to read as it is! It's an addiction, not helped by watching lots of booktube & spending time with all you Litsy enablers! #AllTheBooksAugust📚 #fortheloveofgodgetofftheinternet

I love Sarah's illustration style - it's a beautiful love story. It kind of reminded me of 'Ethel & Ernest'

Possibly one of the most wonderful graphic novels I've read. Stan and Nan celebrates Sarah Lippett's lovely working class grandparents and the love they had for each other and their families. Just beautiful.
