The Blind Astronomer's Daughter
The Blind Astronomer's Daughter | John Pipkin
16 posts | 4 read | 54 to read
In late-eighteenth-century Ireland, Caroline Ainsworth is an accidental stargazer and an orphan. Her adopted father, the astronomer Arthur Ainsworth, lived a life of obsession, hunting an unknown planet near Mercury, often with his precocious daughter at his side. But his fevered search left him blind from staring into the sun; his love and livelihood lost to him, he chose death over a darkened life. Grief-stricken, Caroline abandons the search. She buries her love for Finnegan O'Siodha, the blacksmith's gifted, tinkering son. But her father has left her more than she knew: his cryptic atlas holds the secret to finding a new world at the remote edge of the sky. As Caroline reluctantly resumes the search and confronts her longings, Ireland is swept into rebellion, and Caroline and Finnegan plunged into its violence. Caroline's story unfolds against the background of factual events, and the biography of real-life and legendary astronomer William Herschel. In 1781, Herschel is still an obscure German musician, living with his sister in Bath, England, and building telescopes. Between music lessons, both Herschels study the heavens, William compiling a catalogue of double-stars. And when, quite by accident, he stumbles upon a new planet, far beyond the known boundaries of the solar system, his discovery will forever transform the lives of all these characters. The Blind Astronomer's Daughter is a novel of lives torn between personal desire and historical urgency, set in a time of fiery rebellion and stunning scientific advancement -intricate, lushly rendered, and unforgettable.

Wonderful writing is, perhaps, the best reason to read this book... I enjoyed Pipkin‘s story about astronomy, rivalry, love, obsession & revolution in late 1800s Ireland. If it sounds like a lot going on, it is & I‘ve seen some people complaining about the jumping around. I didn‘t have any trouble tracking the story, however, & even enjoyed, for the most part, the slower pacing of the book. A good selection for fans of historical fiction.

I‘ve mostly finished distracting myself with new books & library previews—I hope—and so now it‘s back to this one which I started reading at the beginning of the month. Definitely don‘t want it to linger into May!

The only problem with having an expansive TBR pile is that at some point some of the books invariably go from being ones you WANT to read to being ones you HAVE to read...because you are trying to shrink the pile even as you are adding to it & while the new books are so nice & shiny & well, NEW & have totally captured your attention...You. Must. Resist. Them. I got this ARC at BEA in 2016 & it was published 10/16—it‘s long overdue for a read.

Becker A very bookish problem we can all relate to. 🤓 5y

The synopsis on this sounds amazing and exactly the type of thing I am interested in reading about. Really looking forward to reading this beauty! I found it fallen between my book shelves, so it was like finding a long lost treasure 😂😂

Beautiful, but slow. Also I didn't know that William Herschel discovered Uranus

#TBRtemptation post! That's right, strictly temptational in its purpose 😈. Here is a luscious book that Sirened me from its shelf. It's a thicker time, with a gorgeous cover, and a great praise. A story set in Ireland, seemingly heavy on the history and science of the 18th Century. Sounds right up my alley 😁. Definitely will be getting this one in the future. Anyone know about this one yet? #blameLitsy #blameMrBook

BookishMarginalia Hadn't heard of it, but I'm intrigued now. Thanks 👍🏼 7y

It's #fridayreads and there's no one in the office, so I'm catching up on this lovely bit of historical fiction. It's got astronomy and 18th century romance and rebellions and everything you could want! ☄✨💫🌙
