You know how you sometimes read a book at the exact right moment in your life, and it‘s so all-consuming that you have to stop yourself from openly weeping while reading it? Oh wait... that‘s not a thing? Just me? ok cool.

It's still very early in the year, but I'm willing to bet this book will be one of my favorite reads of 2017. I had to slow myself down multiple times while reading this one because I just wanted it to last forever. The writing is wonderful, and I learned so much about Korean history and culture. I finished the book a couple days ago, but these characters will stay with me for a while...

This is a photo of their old location (they moved a couple blocks away about a month ago), but the Powerhouse Arena in Brooklyn is one of my favorite indie bookstores in NYC. I snapped this photo during a talk to promote Matt Taibbi's new book in April 2014. This spot has it all: great staff, terrific events and a dreamy space along the Brooklyn waterfront. #getindie

I've started listening to this on my walks home from work, and I'm loving it so far! Edward Herrmann's voice is just so soothing. As a journalist now, with so many publications facing an uncertain future and the industry being in flux, I am endlessly drawn to books about the "Golden Age of Journalism." ❤️

The Animators: A Novel | Kayla Rae Whitaker
post image
Pickpick

Wow, where to begin... This book is SO good. I can't believe this is a debut novel. Whitaker is one heck of a writer, and I can't wait to follow her career. I'm sure people will make comparisons between this book and Kavalier and Clay. I love them both, and Whitaker is just so good at exploring what it's like to love someone and to love what you do. And the writing is beautiful to boot! Highly recommend!

I'm jealous of the access Ashlee Vance got for this book, but that didn't come from luck...it's because Vance is a hell of a journalist. There are some fascinating insights here, and it's well worth it to journey into the mind of one of the most important innovators of our time.

Gezemice Loved this book! So fascinating man, fascinating ideas, crazy driven personality - my guess is Aspergers. The writing is really good, too, fir a business book. 8y

Finished this last night but I still can't form words. Holy moly. Colson Whitehead's writing is so beautiful it's almost poetic, and there are so many layers to this story and Cora's journey. This book really blew me away.

"Was she out of bondage or in its web: how to describe the status of a runaway? Freedom was a thing that shifted as you looked at it, the way a forest is dense with trees up close but from outside, from the empty meadow, you see its true limits." | So many amazing sentences from Colson Whitehead.
