We're on holiday on the Isle of Arran, and visited Brodick Castle, which I was surprised to find was once one of Beckford's homes. It's interesting to compare it with my intentional visit earlier this year to Strawberry Hill, the home of Beckford's literary rival, Walpole. I preferred the latter as a building, though the setting of Brodick is more gothic. A tour guide confirmed my impression that Beckford was an utter shit: Team Walpole! 🏰
bailedEastern mythology mixed with Islamic culture in this book. The Caliph Vathek is tempted by the supernatural being ‘Giaour‘, who promises to bestow on him treasures and talismans. Encouraged by his ambitious mother, Vathek embarks on a journey through exotic landscapes and begins a descent into hell.
The book may be worth reading for its historic value or if you‘re a hardcore fan of weird gothic/fantasy, otherwise, DON‘T! #1001books
The classics on @SerialReader are a real good way to catch up with the #1001books that have been sitting on my shelves for years. They are much more manageable in daily pieces on my phone!
I am now starting this one, an oriental gothic from 1786. It‘s a short one.

so-soHands down one of the weirdest books I've read. . It's the retelling of the Faust legend through Orientalism (make of that what you will). It is flamboyant, excessive and heavy. There are some genuinely distressing scenes in this book which I wish i had been warned about, so: WARNING!
This is wrongly labelled as "Gothic", so do not expect any Gothic tropes. Its 100% Orientalism (which I am not at all a fan of).

pickGothic and a little silly, but very late 18th century--when Genies weren't meant to be cute. Turns out this was a good meant to be creepy (definitely disturbing) read for October. #1001books
