Let's Never Talk About This Again
Let's Never Talk About This Again | Sara Faith Alterman
6 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
Samantha Irby meets Bettyville in this darkly funny and poignant memoir about love, loss, Alzheimer's, and reviving her father's pornographic writing career from Mortified writer and producer Sara Faith Alterman. 12-year-old Sara enjoyed an G-rated existence in suburban New England, filled with over-the-top birthday cakes, Revolutionary War reenactments, and nerdy word games invented by her prudish father, Ira. But Sara's world changed for the icky, when she discovered that Ira had been shielding her from the truth; that he was a campy sex writer who'd sold millions of books in multiple languages, including the wildly popular 'Games You Can Play with Your Pussy.' Which was, to the naive Sara's horror, not a book about cats. For decades the books remained an unspoken family secret, until Ira developed early onset Alzheimer's disease...and announced he'd be reviving his writing career. With Sara's help. In this cringeworthy, hilarious, and moving memoir, Sara shares the profound experience of discovering new facets of her father; once as a child, and again as an adult. 'Let's Never Talk About This Again' is a must-read confessional from a woman who spent years trying to find humor in the perverse and optimism in the darkness, and succeeded.

This was a very poignant read/ much less salacious than the publisher‘s blurb suggests. Growing up Sara idolizes her dad, although she couldn‘t really say what he did for a living. In middle school Sara discovers her dad writes soft core porn but she never confronts him or her mother about it, instead she lets it fester for years. But this is hardly what the book is about, it‘s Sara‘s discovery of her father‘s debilitating illness 👇🏽

Cinfhen That‘s the heart of the story. I simultaneously laughed & cried throughout my listening 🎧💕🥲 3y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Alterman touches on her childhood focusing largely on her father Ira‘s surprising, hidden career, but the real takeaway is the later experience of his Alzheimer‘s disease. The early stages are so hard. And denial is a beast. If you‘ve ever experienced this with a loved one, then you know. You begin to mourn while they‘re living. It‘s fucking unbearable. Alterman is funny, honest, and thoughtful. This hit home.

Cinfhen Thank Gd I have no personal connection to Alzheimer‘s but unfortunately too many of my friends are going through this terrible situation. You‘re right/ it‘s a beast and I‘m sorry it hit close to home for you 😔 4y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Thank you. 💕 We lost my MIL to early onset last year. She was only 66 and sick for many years. 😔 Now, going through it with my sweet grandma who just turned 80. She‘s doing okay, but just had to move out of her home to assisted living. It‘s been hard on my mom. 💔 4y
Cinfhen I‘m truly sorry 😞 4y

Unpopular opinion, but this one didn‘t work for me. The blurb, and most reviews I‘ve seen discuss the author‘s Dad revamping his secret porn book writing when he is diagnosed with Alzheimer‘s. That‘s not quite the focus here. First, the first half of the book discusses her upbringing. And, the hypocritical way her father imposed rules and has angry outbursts was highly cringeworthy. ...

Well-ReadNeck ... I almost bailed before the diagnosis. After the diagnosis, this was a fairly straightforward memoir about Alzheimer‘s and decline which was the better part of the book. 4y
Cinfhen Great review. I really hate when the publisher‘s blurb doesn‘t really match with the content 🤬 4y

4/5🌟Sara grew up in a ver sensored suburban home. One day she finds a stack of pornographic books written by her father. Horrified, she never mentions finding these to anyone. Decades later her father developes early onset Alzheimer's disease, decides he wants her help to revive his writing career. Poignant, hilarious and heartbreaking. Also an eye opening account of the reality of watching a loved one's demise from Alzheimer's. #bookreview
