Strange Star
Strange Star | Emma Carroll

They were coming tonight to tell ghost stories. 'A tale to freeze the blood,' was the only rule. It's a stormy night in 1816 when there's a knock at the door of Villa Diodati. Lying in the rain is a dead girl, and with her, lots of questions. Like, why did she come? What was she looking for? And who was she running from? The breathtaking new book from Emma Carroll, critically-acclaimed author of Frost Hollow Hall, The Girl Who Walked On Air, In Darkling Wood and The Snow Sister. Strange Star is a deliciously creepy story inspired by Mary Shelly and Frankenstein, brought to life by a leading talent in children's literature.

“But I didn‘t much like people‘s sympathy, especially coming as this did from a stranger: it made me feel pitied. And pity scared me, for it forced me to think of all I‘d lost. Grief already gnawed at my edges, and if I let it, it would swallow me whole.”

How is this a MIDDLE GRADE?!? It‘s so good and so lovely, if you like gothic novels you absolutely have to check out this little book.

This is a fun, spooky story that tells a story of how Mary Shelley may have been inspired to write Frankenstein. You don‘t need to have read Frankenstein to enjoy the story itself though. My favorite part really had nothing to do with the major plot line, but there was a very strong supportive female friendship throughout the whole book

Current status: hoping the 2 year old falls asleep while watching a movie on the couch... after trying unsuccessfully to get him to sleep in our hot, stuffy upstairs for over an hour. Starting this while I wait and cross my fingers 🤞🤞

I picked this up as a 2 for 1 offer on a whim when I was buying something else - I've heard lots about Emma Carroll but not read anything by her before. I found myself really enjoying this - it is set in 1816 and features some famous faces from the time. Spooky and gothic but in a very accessible (and acceptable) way for children. Give it a read this summer if you want a bit of gothic horror!
