I've only read Steinbeck's Of mice and men at school. Who knew Steinbeck had such a prosaic view of nature and landscape? Not me, for sure. Why have I not read him before now?

It was an emotionally charged month immersed in this moving novel along with journals & letters by one of my fave authors. Steinbeck certainly succeeded in his goal to “rip a reader‘s nerves to rags” and deeply experience the life of a Dust Bowl migrant…from the brutal oppression to the enduring human spirit and everything in between. It‘s no wonder JS collapsed from exhaustion after finishing it. Now to watch the film!

MemoirsForMe @staci.reads He thought he had the flu since his stomach was in knots and he was dizzy. But then he attributed it to sheer exhaustion. (Or maybe he was just trying to hide from the critics!) 😉 2y

I‘ve read this book three times now. The first time I was in high school and it was the first classic I was actually able to finish. The second time I was struck by the history of the dust bowl and the damage people had done to the land. This time I couldn‘t get over how people treat each other when they‘ve fallen to misfortune. Who knows what will hit me next time. #AuthorAMonth2023
