I finished A SONG FOR SUMMER while I drank red tea and ate mochi, and I‘m SO glad I returned to it. It may not sparkle in quite the same way as Eva Ibbotson‘s other historicals, but it‘s still an enjoyable story with strong moments of pathos. I‘m surprised to discover I loved it overall.

Morning reads with Daisy, who refused to look at the camera. (Turned out the neighbour was refilling his bird feeder and that was a lot more important to her.) I read A SONG FOR SUMMER back in 2012, and the only thing I remember about it is that I liked it way less than any of Eva Ibbotson‘s other books. Here‘s hoping it works better for me this time.

dabbe Hello there, sweet Daisy! 🖤🐾🖤 13mo
willaful I felt the same. :-( Have thought I should give it another go. 13mo

xicanti @willaful I‘m about 140 pages in now and I think I‘m enjoying it more this time, but I don‘t feel it‘s one of her best. She did the whole unconventional boarding school thing much better in THE DRAGONFLY POOL, too. 13mo

#HolidayEscape Day 2!

My top 5 songs that perfectly sum up summer of 2021. I don‘t have a playlist for summer per se but I go by what‘s on repeat on my phone. Besides these, I‘ve been jamming to 2010s songs like Rihanna, Chris Brown, Linkin Park, Green Day and the like. Nostalgic for the time when I was 12🥰😆
How does the time fly?!?

I did a little book shopping on this, my first day of summer break. These are new, gorgeous, lovely covers for Ibbotson. Bookriot really knows how to push my buttons. They are coming out early September. #bookspree

Book Haul!

3. A Song for Summer by Eva Ibbotson

I read The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson when I was about 11 and remember falling in love with then reading a lot of her other books. I have only just discovered that she writes teenage fiction 🙈

Ellen never expected the Hallendorf school to be quite so unusual. Buried deep in the Austrian countryside, Ellen discovers an eccentric world occupied by wild children and teachers, dancers and a tortoise on wheels. And then there is Marek, the part-time gardener and fencing teacher. Ellen is instantly attracted to Marek, and only when she discovers his true identity does she realize the danger their newfound love faces in the shadow of war.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such a lovely story. The story begins just before WWII in Austria and continues through the war, but it is very character driven. I really love Ellen! She's sweet and kind, but stubborn and strong. Eva Ibbotson knows how to break your heart with one sentence. Simple and beautiful!

A moving love story, set in Austria. Nothing could be more cruel than the threat of Hitler's Nazi ruining the peace.

readinginthedark Interesting! I've only read her children's fantasy books. 8y
CrowCAH @readinginthedark her young adult books are amazing! Try one sometime! 😊 8y
