Maman's Homesick Pie
Maman's Homesick Pie: A Persian Heart in an American Kitchen | Donia Bijan
6 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
For Donia Bijans family, food has been the language they use to tell their stories and to communicate their love. In 1978, when the Islamic revolution in Iran threatened their safety, they fled to Californias Bay Area, where the familiar flavors of Bijans mothers cooking formed a bridge to the life they left behind. Now, through the prism of food, award-winning chef Donia Bijan unwinds her own story, finding that at the heart of it all is her mother, whose love and support enabled Bijan to realize her dreams. From the Persian world of her youth to the American life she embraced as a teenager to her years at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris (studying under the infamous Madame Brassart) to apprenticeships in Frances three-star kitchens and finally back to San Francisco, where she opened her own celebrated bistro, Bijan evokes a vibrant kaleidoscope of cultures and cuisines. And she shares thirty inspired recipes from her childhood (Saffron Yogurt Rice with Chicken and Eggplant and Orange Cardamom Cookies), her French training (Ratatouille with Black Olives and Fried Bread and Purple Plum Skillet Tart), and her cooking career (Roast Duck Legs with Dates and Warm Lentil Salad and Rose Petal Ice Cream). An exhilarating, heartfelt memoir, Mamans Homesick Pie is also a reminder of the women who encourage us to shine.

A beautiful memoir filled with love. Love for ones home, family and food. I loved to hear Bijans voice through her text, even though I haven't known about her before reading this book. But she's such an inspirational woman, and her memoir is, too. And so are the recipes she added. I really need to try some of them. Soon.

For anyone who has ever been homesick and longed for that moment of comfort food that takes you back to childhood this book is for you. Part memoir, part cookbook Chef Bijan writes a great love story to her family and the food they shared. Bonus - she includes recipes at the end of each chapter. My favourite-fava bean omelet!

Day 14 #marchintoreading #pipie Pie for Pi Day from my Goodreads 'Read' stack. Maman's Homesick Pie is a favorite foodie memoir. I only made it through the first 11 books of the Hannah Swenson mysteries including these 2 pie titles but I have a few more loaded on my Kindle. The 2 pie cookbooks are from blog reviews. A stop for Chocolate Haupia Cream Pie at Ted's Bakery is a North Shore must (Haupia is a creamy coconut pudding), it's SO good!😋🌴👍

Centique Man that pie looks good! Sweet pies/tarts aren't all that common here in NZ bakeries - definitely never seen a coconut one. I need to visit Hawaii!! 8y
tracyrowanreads I just followed your networked blog on Facebook. Yum 8y

Just started this and it promises to be good. But I am also really appreciating the physical attributes of this book. It is hardcover with attractive colors and design but no dust jacket. It is also a size and smoothness that makes it really easy to hold. It feels like the cross between a school library edition and a cookbook. It is quite pleasurable. I would be more amenable to buying in hardcover if more were like this. (I hate dust jackets).

LeahBergen I have this one and was also really impressed with how physically lovely it is. (edited) 8y
DebinHawaii I love this book and agree completely that it is beautiful and made perfectly for reading. 8y

#FunFridayPhoto Here are 4 favorite memoirs of mine. Try 'As You Wish' in print for for the photos & audio for the voices, 'Manman's Homesick Pie" is a favorite foodie memoir that will make you hungry, 'Working Stiff' is fascinating if you are interested in pathology, & 'Stir' is a recent audio find that I picked for my virtual foodie bookclub Jan/Feb selection so I am going to (re)read the print version. You can't go wrong with any of these!??
