"Set in 1953, [this book] explores the collision of two teenagers facing extraordinary hardship. Their meeting is inevitable, devastating, and ultimately healing. Their stories, a collection of events, are each on their own harmless. But together, one after the other, they change the world"--Page 4 of cover.

#BookSpinBingo @TheAromaofBooks #fairytalereadingchallenge @Charityann

Lyrical, yet sad, YA retelling of Peter Pan. Nora is a "rich" girl with an abusive father. Kettle is one of the "lost children" forced into the streets after WWII because he's Japanese American and lost his parents in the war. The story is told alternating between their POVs and it unfolds in a heartbreakingly beautiful way.

Last month's bookclub pick. I found this book a bit confusing and I'm not sure how I feel about it. Vague at times, it took me til halfway through to remember that it is supposed to be set after the second world war, and yet the descriptions evoked quite clear images for me. I found that the plot had holes and at times unbelievable yet I felt invested in the characters.

I have very mixed feelings about this book. The second half was much stronger than the first. The structure was far too loose and inconsistent. But I loved Nora's story and Kettle grew in me (took a while though). I really did want to find out what happened to them both and I was screaming at them in my head trying to get them to bend to my will.

I'm on my library placement for the next three weeks and there hasn't been a lot of time to read despite being surrounded by books all day. I'm on a deadline to get this read by bookclub on Sunday. It's going to be tight.

CarolynM Hope you're enjoying the placement 6y
Joanne1 Thanks @CarolynM I am enjoying it but I keep bringing books home with me. This is not going to be good for my TBR! 6y

I really liked this!
The story is strongly invested in its title characters and their seperate hardships which drive much of their behaviour. Also quite fascinating reading about the internment of Japanese Americans - can anyone recommend any other books set in this time period?

raeintheworld Did you read Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford? 7y

That was good, but it could have been SO much better. Kin & Kettle were AMAZING 😍. But the plot doesn't start till the last 1/3 of the book! Almost the whole thing is long, drawn out backstory. This also meant that the actual plot was terribly rushed & the end made little sense. And, were we in 1950s America? BOY was it hard to tell, because the tone stayed absolutely the same & everyone sounded like it was 2017. Sweet, but full of holes. ★★★☆☆.

The characters and plot were just about ruined by a sloppy story structure. Switching narrators rarely works for me, and in this book they sometimes changed multiple times in one chapter. It was just clumsy and distracting, instead of illuminating. Super disappointing.

"Stars are like secrets. They need to fall. Let them fall."

fanbookart I saw this book before. Is it good? 8y
nluev Yes! It was a little slow for me at first, but then it started to really pick up. It's an easy read. It takes place in post-WWII US and follows the struggles of two teenagers so it's written in a dual perspective. 8y

Have finally twigged that this is set in the 1950s and that Kettle is Japanese American...

theme wise could easily be present day...

I'm not entirely sure how this book came to be in my kindle (probably via bookbub... I'm click happy) but it's amazing, raw and horrific - and apparently a Peter Pan retelling (except so far firmly in the world as we know it)

diovival Ooo I downloaded this to my Nook too. Saw it in an email. 8y

I have his ears, nose, and hair... and he can't stand it. I wish I could scrub out my face and start again. Not because it would protect me, but because it would mean that I wouldn't see him in my reflection.

My gaze connects with his for a moment before I have to look away. In his eyes are the reflections of the beating I didn't know how to stop, and even though my heart remembers, the rest of me would like to forget.
