Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness, and the Making of a Great Chef
Devil in the Kitchen: Sex, Pain, Madness, and the Making of a Great Chef | Marco Pierre White
9 posts | 6 read | 8 to read
"There hasn't been a food memoir this deliciously wicked since Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential." "Portland Oregonian""The Devil in the Kitchen" is legendary chef Marco Pierre White's memoir of growing up working-class in Leeds and going on to become a king in the culinary world the original celebrity chef. The first British chef (and the youngest chef anywhere) to win three Michelin stars and also the only one to ever give them all back is known equally for his astonishing talent and for being a chain-smoking, pot-throwing enfant terrible of the kitchen. In "The Devil in the Kitchen" he takes readers on a revealing and raucous ride, featuring some of the biggest names in the food world and beyond. It's truly a decadent feast for anyone who loves food or just a great story."

⭐️⭐️⭐️ I‘m a bit of a sucker for chef memoirs, and this one was okay. Incredibly accomplished, abrasive chef and his quest for 3 Michelin stars. As a reader, I never really got on board and felt why the 3 stars were so important to him, other than that they were there. This includes some of the bad behavior of Kitchen Confidential and at a higher level of cooking, but lacks Bourdain‘s humor and charm.

Just finished the tagged book, which gives me a #BookSpin bingo for August! 14 books read (13 audiobooks, 1 Kindle). Several good ones (The Guncle, Homeland Elegies, Pachinko, and Wordslut stand out), and only one DNF, which happened to be my #Bookspin). Need to give myself some more free spaces for September…

Going with one of my other half's favorite quotes tonight. Maybe one of these days he'll finally let me borrow the book instead of just reading me favored bits as he rereads it yet again. 🤷‍♀️

Great if you have any interest in the culture of Michelin starred restaurants.

Finally finished my #readharder challenge for 2016! It was my first time doing a reading challenge like this and I loved it. I think it really diversified my reading this year. I read a lot of books I wouldn't have picked up ordinarily. My fave discovery was the food memoir 'Devil in the Kitchen' By Marco Pierre White. Super excited to see the challenges for 2017

I am a huge MPW fan so there wasn't much chance of me not liking this book. It's an engaging narrative of the great kitchens of the 80s and 90s; and also of the power of hard work and resilience. In spite of a lot of bad behaviour, MPW endears himself to the reader, showing a more complex side to the enfant terrible. Loved it.

Can't get enough of this. You can always rely on MPW to call it like it is...

Back on the #readharder buzz

Redheadrambles Woohoo - throwing you moral support. What's have you got to go ? This one looks good, interested to see what you think. I can only handle one chef novel once and a while so might tackle this one next year . 8y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles awesome! I'm really enjoying this, but am such a MPW fangirl from Australian Masterchef haha. I've got this one, a book about politics, a horror novel and a book published in the year I was born left. Oh and read a book aloud, which might have to be to my cat! I've tagged my picks below How are you going? 8y

Redheadrambles great selections I am very keen to read the Missoula - I like Krakauer so much. I have science, essays and book to film 8y
ClairesReads @Redheadrambles nice! I love Krakauer too! 8y
Redheadrambles Somehow mismanaged to book -to - film task twice by reading The Devil in the White city thinking it was a film (it's not) and then A Monster Calls (film out 2017) who knew this task would cause me such angst ! 8y
