5 posts | 2 read | 5 to read
"An informative and appealing civics lesson for first-time voters and old hands alike." Publisher's Weekly From Nick Capodice & Hannah McCarthy, the hosts of New Hampshire Public Radios Civics 101, and New Yorker cartoonist Tom Toro, A User's Guide to Democracy is a lively crash course in everything you should know about how the US government works. Do you know what the Secretary of Defense does all day? Are you sure you know the difference between the House and the Senate? Have you been pretending you know what Federalism is for the last 20 years? Dont worry--youre not alone. The American government and its processes can be dizzyingly complex and obscure. Until now. Within this book are the keys to knowing what youre talking about when you argue politics with the uncle you only see at Thanksgiving. Its the book that sits on your desk for quick reference when the nightly news boggles your mind. This approachable and informative guide gives you the lowdown on everything from the three branches of government, to what you can actually do to make your vote count, to how our founding documents affect our daily lives. Now is the time to finally understand who does what, how they do it, and the best way to get them to listen to you.

Election Day 2020. If you haven‘t already voted, go vote!

I voted early since we are a high risk household.

I was lucky enough to get an audio and an ebook version of this book and I really appreciated it. I wasn‘t impressed with the illustrations, but from a few other reviews I‘ve seen, I think the ones in my #NetGalley copy are preliminary. It gives a thorough summary of government in the U.S. from local to national and emphasizes things you can do as an individual. It was a perfect listen leading up to an election.

Daisey I received an audio version of this book through the #Librofm #ALC program. The duration of the audio is 7 hours 52 minutes. 4y
Daisey One section I bookmarked to go back to was the hand gestures for remembering the Bill of Rights. 4y

The authors host a show and podcast called Civics 101 on New Hampshire Public Radio. This makes them uniquely qualified to write a very timely 21st century primer on everything about U.S. government, with hilarious illustrations by The New Yorker‘s Tom Toro. Plus, it‘s actually engaging, unlike my memories of high school civics class. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
