Chevalier: The Welch Guard Series, Book 2
Chevalier: The Welch Guard Series, Book 2 | Sarah Woodbury
10 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
July 1284. King Edward has invited the nobility of England, Ireland, and Scotland to Nefyn, one of the most remote spots in Wales, for a Round Table—a tournament as in the tales of King Arthur to celebrate Edward’s victory over the Welsh and his ascension to Arthur’s throne.
Not everyone sees the tournament as a friendly competition, however, and in short order, Rhys and Catrin are called to investigate the death of a knight in the retinue of the Earl of Gloucester. But just as in King Arthur’s court, malice and treason lurk beneath the surface, so when murder turns to treachery, it is up to Catrin and Rhys to separate fact from fiction in Chevalier, the second book in The Welsh Guard Mysteries.

I greatly enjoyed the continuation of this series. I absolutely love Rhys. It‘s about bloody time Rhys and Catrin got married (I actually kind of expected it to happen between the two books, but they‘re both hard headed so it took a bit longer). I liked that it explored how the English entirely coopted the Arthur legends, making them into something entirely different. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics I also enjoyed the cross reference to the Gareth and Gwen series, when it is mentioned that the bards are singing of Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd‘s betrayal and treachery. (I‘m still not over The Lost Brother) 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻 (edited) 3y
GingerAntics I think my favourite part of the book (outside of the King Arthur theme) was finding out the secret I knew Rhys was keeping through the whole first book and at least half of this second book. It‘s such a great plot line and the revelation made me love and respect Rhys all the more. I‘m torn among Rhys, Gareth, and Cade as my favourite Sarah Woodbury character. It may be a three-way tie. #SarahWoodbury #Chevalier #WelshGuardSeries 3y

CADWALADR IS A BLOODY WEE GIT!!!
Of course, she‘s referring to the treacherous Cadwaladr ap Gruffydd who is a pain in everyone‘s back side in the Gareth and Gwen series, most especially after he accidentally kills his nephew thinking he‘s his father (Cadwaladr‘s older brother and King). I‘m slightly pleased that bards are singing of his treachery!!!

GingerAntics @Texreader I approve, and I want to hear the songs!!! I‘m still not over what he did to Rhun. 😢😢😢 3y

Well, it‘s about bloody time these two got their crap together and realised they‘ve loved each other since they were kids.

I think it‘s fair to say this is true of all conquering peoples, but English have certainly been egregious about this with the Celtic peoples. First Wales, then Ireland, then Scotland. They were all “lesser” people, often referred to as “barbarians” or similar. All three languages were very nearly eradicated. I‘m not going to lie, I take that personally.

I find this amusing, because the thing I like most about him is him honesty and integrity. Rhys is a man who lives by all six Celtic virtues. Admittedly, he does know when to keep his mouth shut and just fail to mention things sometimes. It‘s never in a malicious way, but it‘s more in a self preservation, loyalty, honour sort of way. I think he truly embodies “I speak true words or I stand in silence.”

Wow, she pretty much spelled it out right there. Let the cultural appropriation games begin!!! Eddie is trying to portray himself to the Welsh he has just conquered as Arthur returned (as legend says he will). Never mind the fact that he‘s totally botching it and anglicising it.

This book includes the mythology of King Arthur and how the English coopted and anglicised it.

Crazeedi This sounds really good! 3y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi it‘s the second in this series. The first one is Crouchback. I read it when it first came out and @texreader read it a few-ish months ago for reading Europe for Wales. It‘s a fun little series. If you like Sarah Woodbury you‘ll love this. If you‘ve never read her, it‘s not a bad intro. 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader @julesG it was these books and the Gareth and Gwen books that gave me the answer during season 2 of The Crown when Charles is in Wales and he asks, “who is Llewelyn?” I said, out loud, “the last proper Prince of Wales you fool.” My mother goes “you don‘t know that.” Then his tutor tells him a few minutes later and she was impressed. 3y

Texreader @Crazeedi @julesg Crouchback is an excellent book to get insight into what life was like when Wales fell to the Normans and lost its independence. (edited) 3y
Crazeedi @Texreader thanks! 3y
GingerAntics @Crazeedi I agree with what @Texreader said. It very much brings to life the struggle the Welsh felt when the Normans took over and the mixed loyalties some Welsh felt, because the Welsh always fought with the Normans against invaders, so they were friends with some of the Normans who were now ruling over them and ending their way of life. 3y
