Jo Segura and I have some things in common. In her note at the end of the book she describes her love for adventure stories/films and archeology. She wanted to write a book that not only reflected her love for Indiana Jones, Lara Croft, the Librarian,... but also her Mexican heritage. I think she managed it well.

A 🌶️ #RomCom about a pair of chalk and cheese archaeologists who've been loathing each other for years, or have they?

Strong opening page/paragraph. Well, whatever, I liked it enough to read the book.

A titan was murdered and Cal investigates.

An interesting blend of genre and interesting world-building. Snarky MC, first person POV, villains with ethics and Sci-fi that makes sense.

kwmg40 I'd read this at the beginning of the year, so I decided not to reread it so soon. I recall liking the satirical elements but I wasn't all that enthusiastic about the story itself. I think I would have appreciated it much more if I were familiar with Faust. I'll probably postpone a reread of Eric until after I read Faust, and I'm sure it'll seem much funnier then. 1w

julesG Re-reading the Rincewind books, Rincewind is slowly growing on me. I enjoyed reading my illustrated edition alongside the audiobook. 1w
willaful I thought the character of the Creator was very similar to Slartibartfast from The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. 1w
TheSpineView I agree with @julesG that Rincewind is growing on me too. I liked this take on Hell is paved with good intentions. However, it did get a bit confusing and convuled bit always humorous. 1w
willaful @TheSpineView The hell is wonderful. I found myself wondering if this had provided some inspiration for “The Good Place.“ 1w
BookWrym I was more caught up by the Greek mythology. Hell reminded me of Dante‘s Inferno. I did enjoy the demons as well and how easy they were to confuse. 1w
julesG @kwmg40 I had to read Goethe's Faust in school. Which means we also talked about the other Faust/Bargain with the Devil stories. 1w
julesG Eric summoning a demon always brings up Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus trilogy (YA, definitely darker than Pratchett). There's a summoning scene at the beginning of Bartimaeus that is very similar, probably because Bartimaeus is a very sarcastic demon. 😁 1w
julesG @BookWrym What Hell would look like if Dante had had Cheerios for breakfast. 😁 1w
kwmg40 Sorry for commenting on the wrong thread! As you can tell, I‘m not all that good at reading instructions. 😂 Anyhow, I‘m enjoying reading the comments here! 1w
BookmarkTavern I think this is my favorite Rincewind book! It‘s so humorous, and I‘ve read Faustian stories before, so I thought I knew where everything would go, but the sort of djinn interpretation of Eric‘s wishes just made me laugh out loud. 1w
julesG @kwmg40 no problem, that's why I answered here. 😉 1w
BarbaraJean @julesG @TheSpineView I definitely liked Rincewind better here than in Sourcery, but I kind of feel like I'm marking time until I can get to the Pratchett I really like. I'm interested to make my way through the Discworld beyond my previous brief forays, but I'm understanding what people mean when they've said I'll prefer certain sub-series to others. @willaful I wondered the same thing about this maybe being an influence on The Good Place! 2d
willaful @BarbaraJean It's interesting how many of us fans aren't really into the Rincewind books.

I searched but couldn't anything specifically saying TGP created mentioned Pratchett, but definitely a lot of people have seen the similarities.

A travelling theatre actress and a former military surgeon are thrown together to find the Hellfire Club's secrets her brother hid before his death. A letter with clues sends them on a dangerous scavenger hunt followed by men who are ready to kill for those secrets. Not what I expected, based on the blurb.

It's the end of the 21st century. A class reunion on a luxury space station. There are two ensembles of characters, the ones "below stairs" and the ones "above stairs".

The rich people "above stairs" have rich-people-problems. Foremost, how to outwit the MERIT system that could get them to Mars. They have known each other since school. They have drifted apart, but are happy to ⬇️

#NetGalley #ARC

julesG to reconnect, again mostly to exploit their connections to their own advantage.

The crew "below stairs" is fed up with being invisible, having less value than the rich people. They work on the luxury space station to fund their families' lives down on Earth, which becomes less habitable by the minute.

This could have worked, but it was packed with a bit too much of everything, in my opinion:

- too many POV

⬇️
3w
julesG - so many plot angles: dying Earth, "Capitalism is bad!", exploited workforce is enraged, murder mystery?, MERIT system benefits the rich straight population, another murder mystery in the past timeline, ...

- not a single like-able character

- why all the kinky stuff?

#ARC #NetGalley #MountARC

A prequel novella to Dawson's HMRC series.

It's an alternate historical fantasy based on the historical figures of Anne Boleyn and her ladies-in-waiting.

The story didn't grip me like the other books in the series. It wasn't just the usual depiction of promiscuous Anne or Anne the witch that didn't sit well with me, what pulled me out of the story most often were the anachronisms used ⬇️

2.5/5 stars

julesG ... the anachronisms used (right now only "sharing a bevy" and "smog" come to mind, but there were more).

All in all an interesting prequel, but it didn't add depth or important information to the existing/contemporary storyline.

This was fun. Annie is to meet her great-aunt for the first time. But just before the meeting aunt Francis is murdered. Annie, being a writer of murder mysteries, jumps in to solve the murder. What she finds out is connected to a fortune Francis was told at age 16, which predicted Francis's murder and had haunted her all her life. It seems Francis had solved her murder and paid for it by being killed. (yes, I'm wording it like this on purpose).

Weird, maybe bonkers, definitely ingenious dystopian fiction. It's unlike anything I've read before.

I need the sequel by yesterday.

BarbaraJean I‘ve been waiting for the sequel for 12 years!! Which means I need to re-read this first…😆 1mo
julesG @BarbaraJean Glad I waited this long before reading it. 1mo
BarbaraJean Your timing is perfect! I hear there may be a third book but I‘m not holding my breath yet, considering the gap between these two. 1mo

Pickpick

It's 1926, Ringmaster and her crew of Sparks (people with magical abilities) travel across the US to bring people joy and to help "special guests" in which ever way possible. This also includes Ringmaster, her wife Odette and their friend Mauve to travel through time (⬇️)

It's also 1917, Edward was just rescued from a WW I trench by Ruth. The two run away to join the circus.

Low pick for me, see comments

julesG Edward has a spark and should learn to use it properly. 1mo
julesG Ringmaster is on the run from her husband, the famous Circus King. 1mo
julesG The trips in time often are into the future. Where the three women try to prevent WW II from happening. 1mo

Mehso-so

Out already

Debut SF novel with a bit of romance. Unique cultural approach: Korea is the leading nation for space exploration.

Found family, enemies-to-lovers(?), cliffhanger ending.

Nothing much happens in the first 3/4 of the book, unfortunately. Secondary characters are mere plot devices and can only be distinguished by their quirks.

#5JoysFriday @DebinHawaii

A quiet week thanks to a public holiday on Thursday (May is full of public holidays here in Germany).

I should have added: a lovely cup of coffee and some Christmas biscuits (leftovers in a tightly closed tin) while sitting outside in the sunshine. 😜🙈

TheBookHippie Yay for coffee and biscuits!!! 1mo
DebinHawaii Lovely list of joys! 💛💛💛 The flowers are so pretty! And yay to coffee & biscuits! Thanks for sharing & spreading the joy! 🤗 1mo
