Pub Day was 20 May 2025

Four people travel back in time to relive an important memory. When they are stuck in the past after their allotted hour has run out, they wonder whether they might be able to stay in the past and change the events that made them come back. Although the four people don't know each other it is soon clear that they might actually share the pivotal moment in their lives. ⬇️

julesG What will happen if each of them tries to change the past?

The book made me turn the pages faster than I expected to. First I needed to find out what had happened on that specific night, then I needed to find out whether they could change the outcome. It's a story about grief and regret, but also about hope and forgiveness.

I enjoyed that both MCs were lawyers in their thirties. Their backstories, dialogue, struggles, and misunderstandings felt real. What I loved the most though was Charles' POV. It's clear early on that he is neurodiverse, for example, he seems to come across as robotic at times and has trouble reading people's emotions. This is reflected in the way his chapters are written, ⬇️

Pub Day: 03 July 2025

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

julesG they show the scenes as Charles sees them, no excess emotions, little to no adjectives, raw dialogue. I loved it! I want to see more neurodiverse POV like his in (romance) novels. 4d

BookmarkTavern A small group of individuals believing they‘ve been deprived of what‘s rightfully due them decide to put a puppet leader in charge to control, only to end up with a narcissistic, greedy, destructive force intent on sowing fear and chaos around him? Gee, I wonder how relevant that story could be? 😅😅 I can‘t believe this was written over thirty years ago. 3d
willaful @BookmarkTavern I know, Terry Pratchett wouldn't be surprised by anything.

I think I enjoyed this more than I remember doing so when I first read it. It was fun to see the Watch becoming a real force for good.

julesG @willaful I agree, I enjoyed it a lot more this time. Maybe because I'm older/wiser and have seen a few things happening. 3d
BarbaraJean This is my first time reading the Watch novels! Having seen Vimes (and the Watch) now in other novels, I was surprised to find him in the gutter at the beginning here! It was so fascinating to see the origins of characters I‘d enjoyed later glimpses of elsewhere. @BookmarkTavern 😂😂😭 3d
AlaMich The audio version of this has been so delightful!! It‘s adding considerably to my enjoyment. 3d
julesG @AlaMich Which version did you listen to? Stephen Briggs, Tony Robinson, or Jon Culshaw with Peter Serafinowicz and Bill Nighy? 3d
AlaMich @julesG The last one. I didn‘t realize there were three audio versions. 3d

#TimeTravelTop5 @Centique @Ruthiella

I really like time travel stories. I've read a lot. Here are only a few of my favourites.

Top picture is The Chronicles of St Mary's series and its spin-off series featuring the Time Police

Ruthiella I kept seeing The Night Watch in online Time Travel Novel lists. I‘m reading the Discworld books now in order, after cherry picking but have almost 30 books to go before I get there! 😅 (edited) 5d
julesG @Ruthiella I keep forgetting that it's a time travel novel 🤦🏻‍♀️🤣 5d

Centique I loved This is how you lose the Time War too! I am going to definitely pick up DODO and Just One Damned Thing. Have you read Connie Willis? Just One Damned Thing sounds a little like her historian series which starts with 5d
julesG @Centique I DNF'd Doomsday Book. Mainly for the historical/linguistic inaccuracies within the first few chapters of the time travel. I have a background in medieval history and linguistics. With my basic knowledge of the language(s) spoken in England at the time, plus the MCs training, the premise of a language barrier didn't make sense to me. And I've DNF'd books for smaller things. Petty, I know. But there are lots of other books waiting for me. 4d

Mehso-so

Although I liked seeing this time period from a non-European perspective and in a non-EU setting, I never really got into the story. Maybe it was the slower pace, maybe it was the magical realism element that I wish had either been left out entirely, or had been more "fleshed out". Or maybe, having read Stiefvater's YA work, I had too high expectations.

Another September. Another Earls' Trip. This time the three gentlemen are off to visit Brighton for a fortnight of being together, talking, sightseeing, maybe some sea bathing. Like the last Earls' Trip, things do not go completely according to plan, when Effie meets his pen pal Miss Juliana Evans.

Effie and Juliana have had a longstanding epistolary relationship. They both have feelings for each other. Yet, a happy ending for them doesn't ⬇️

julesG seem to be possible, there seem to be too many insurmountable obstacles; starting with Effie's gender and not ending with an age gap.

It takes the protagonists some time to work out how a happily ever after might work. This process feels natural; they don't rush, they weigh the options, they seek the help of friends and family, they listen to their instincts.
⬇️
3w
julesG I like the slower pace of the novel and the friendship between Simon, Effie and Archie, which turned into a found family which supports its members. Since the earls have already planned next year's Earls' Trip, I am looking forward to reading about how nerdy Simon is going to woo the woman of his dreams. 3w

A wedding on an island, with a storm rolling in and some tension between the guests and people in the wedding party; what could possibly go wrong? Eleanor, the writer of detective fiction, starts investigating.

Fourth wall breaks, an unreliable narrator, and quirky secondary characters make this a page turner. I cannot wait to see what will happen to Eleanor next, she's going on a retreat with some other crime writers next.

Third instalment of the series.

The main plot mystery is nothing surprising. The old case subplot though, makes you wonder whether Kat's career is based on lies.

The ending had a twist I had anticipated, but within that twist were surprising twists. (This will make sense once you've read it.)

Murderbot is not a mother, it doesn't have a gender or sex related part, but it's more of a mother than a lot of mothers I've read about lately.

You may tell me I'm wrong. 😉

Ruthiella Definitely agree. Murderbot cares for and protects their humans! 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I have read the series, and agree…and sadly some of that is our socialization about what mothers do, should do, and fathers should not. But although Murderbot is genderless, I often find myself thinking of her as a her. And in my brain applying female pronouns. Which is not really a good thing, it does not want that label, they like themselves the way they are….my imposing a mental “she” is probably a factor that I need to work on. And ⤵️ 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ how sad is it really, when you think about it, that caring for other humans well-being is considered a feminine trait, and female traits are considered less than in our society. 😬. Ok, now I have depressed myself. Sorry for the ramble. 1mo
See All 14 Comments
ImperfectCJ Nurturing is (or should be) genderless. And I agree...Murderbot is one heck of a nurturer. I love being a mother and celebrating motherhood, but I wonder what things would be like if we had a day to celebrate nurturing regardless of gender? 1mo
ImperfectCJ @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I find myself thinking of Murderbot as "she", too. I've talked with my elder (nonbinary, adult) kid about this, and we hypothesized that maybe it depends on which aspects of Murderbot a reader relates to, and that perhaps the genderlessness of Murderbot makes it so the reader attributes their own gender to Murderbot. I think it's something to be curious about rather than feel bad about. 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ Thank you. I appreciate that. I do not have a non-binary adult to discuss these thoughts with….and have found myself wondering when I mentally gender a non-gendered fictional character if there is not a parallel between forcing my mental categories on someone fictional and forcing real live humans into a binary pattern they did not ask for either. Basically if I can not make that mental leap with a fictional character in a ⤵️ 1mo
Riveted_Reader_Melissa ↪️ Completely different world… it makes me worry a little about myself. And I am a the English speaking person that points out to people that “they” has been a singular pronoun forever when you do not know a specific gender. 1mo
Kitta I agree Murderbot has some mother-like characteristics! I can hold the duality of being a mother and being genderless together in my mind somehow. I don‘t really think of Murderbot as anything but an it? Maybe slightly male or masculine based on its presentation of itself? Interesting you both use female pronouns sometimes for it, that had never occurred to me! @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ 1mo
BookmarkTavern I can see that! The exasperation and fondness as Murderbot has to take care of its humans! Thanks for posting! 1mo
julesG @Ruthiella @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @ImperfectCJ @Kitta @BookmarkTavern - oh wow, didn't expect such interesting responses. As a speaker of German my mind often goes to the masculine pronoun when talking about Murderbot. The German word for "robot" is masculine, and that -sadly- also translates into English. I try to catch it, but it sometimes slips out. My children love to make fun of me for saying "he", but they know I know. 1mo
julesG Also, yes, it's sad that we associate nurturing mainly with the feminine. This needs to change, but it's a battle that won't change in my lifetime. 1mo
BookmarkTavern I never even considered how translations into languages with gendered nouns would shape someone‘s perception. That is so interesting! 1mo
julesG @BookmarkTavern I haven't read Murderbot in German. My son did and assures me the German "es" is used - gender neutral singular pronoun, like "it". But that darn word "Roboter" (robot) is masculine and keeps scrambling my brain. 1mo

kwmg40 None of the libraries I have access to had a copy and I wasn‘t sure this companion book was worth purchasing, so I‘m skipping it for now. Hope to get to it eventually if I can get hold of a copy. 1mo
julesG @kwmg40 You didn't miss much. Honestly. Mrs Bradshaw travels the Disc by train and writes her travel log. I didn't have the impression it added a lot to my knowledge of Discworld 1mo
kwmg40 Thanks. Good to know this one can be skipped without missing any really important Discworld info. I‘ve moved on to our next book, Guards, Guards, and enjoying the reread even more than my first read of it. 1mo

1) both? Neither? I often listen to audiobooks when I do "fun" stuff around the house or run errands, I'm mostly standing. But I get to sit down sometimes. And lie in bed when reading in bed.

2) ARC, 3 chapters in I'm slightly annoyed by the "coincidences" that will certainly lead to what's going to be the embarrassment-meet-cute any paragraph now. ?

TheSpineView That book already sounds interesting. Love when something funny happens to bring people together. Thanks for playing 1mo

1) roughly 800 books, I guess. My kids probably have about 600 books together. 🫣🫣

2) phew, difficult to choose. Quite a few good books.

TheSpineView I was afraid to do an actual count.🤪 Thanks for playing 1mo
julesG @TheSpineView I guesstimated. How many books on a shelf x the amount of shelves. Then rounded up; some shelves are not only double stacked but have some books crammed on top too. 🫣🫣 1mo

#NetGalley #ARC #MountARC

I was lucky to get an #audiobook ARC for the 12th Lady Hardcastle Mystery, Pub Day 6th May.

Do I read the books for the cosy mystery? No. I'm here for all the characters and the banter, especially between Maid Florence Armstrong and Lady Hardcastle. I was absolutely not disappointed. Loved every minute of the story and the audiobook!

Mehso-so

Chinese folk tales inspired NA fantasy romance (?) - or older YA romantasy (?) with a pinch of 🌶️

An okay read. A bit too much telling for me. Also, very predictable.

On the plus side, bought and read within 30 hours. I'm proud of myself. 😉 Especially, since it was one of my daughter's picks. 😁

Yesterday's spring/Easter break excursion #BookHaul. Somehow only one of the books is really for me (not the tagged one). I have to share the other five with the teenager.

@Oryx has found a gem! I now have to get the next book in the series because this ends with a cliffhanger. 😬

Truly enjoyed being in the head of this psychopath and need to know what is going to happen next.

#SeriesLove2025 @Andrew65 @TheSpineView

Leniverse Thanks for the warning. I hate cliffhangers, especially when I don't expect them. 2mo

Oryx Yes!! Right?? It's so fun. I am also enjoying the second one, and 3 and 4 are on their way. So happy you also enjoyed them! 2mo

1) at the moment, yes - paid for online shopping for the kids and they paid me back in cash. I normally only have about €20 in cash with me, for emergencies. I just don't get out that much. 😉

2) kind of - he comes from money, she doesn't. Influences both, but he's very down to earth and she's embarrassed by her parents' antics.

TheSpineView That book sounds interesting. Stacked ❤️📚 2mo
