M/M 50 Shades of Grey-ish #Romance

Still a toxic relationship, but somehow better/more charming than the original. Also, Arden is not as wet a blanket as Anastasia. Also also, no kinky red room of racks and riding crops.

I'll probably read the second book in the trilogy.

@Cinfhen, you were right, I enjoyed this very much.

MC has chronic fatigue syndrome. MC's love interest's mother had MS. I have both (yeah!); you have no idea how often I thought "wow, the author is spot on with the symptoms."

Jewish enemies(?)-to-lovers romance with a large dollop of chronic illness as a reason for not getting together (I so relate). Loved how tough the MC was.

Suet624 You have both? I‘m so sorry! 💕 1w

#MountARC

I liked the idea of the story, Underground Railroad conductors turned detectives, and there is magic involved. Sadly, I didn't like the execution.

Too many characters are introduced, all lacked back story. The magic system is not really explained. The mystery is interesting, but since there was too much telling, via dialogue between the two main characters Hetty and Benjy, it was not very engaging.

There is a thousand year old space ship about to be sucked into a supernova. MC Sean, among others, has to retrieve important data about the Philosopher's Stone from the ship. The quick job turns into alien encounters, sociopolitical debates and a rather predictable outcome.

I liked the short chapters and the chapter titles. I did not enjoy the 600+ pages of the book. The story could have been told in half the page-count.

Like the three other books in this series, this book can be read as a standalone. Reading the other books in the series, in order or not, won‘t help with that feeling of “what the … am I reading here?” It's a bonkers wild ride with aliens and magical soy sauce and parasites and a magical egg that demands human sacrifices and ...

In other words, a novel where you have to trust that the author knows what they were doing and go with the flow.

The Lenten Ball, also known as The Mad Women's Ball, is held in March at the Salpetriere Asylum in Paris. The women of the asylum look forward to this annual event.

The story is told from the POV of the recently incarcerated Eugenie and the nurse Genevieve, mainly. The story focuses on the lives unwanted and inconvenient women led in asylums and how easy it must have been for families to get rid of their womenfolk in such establishments.

sarahbarnes I just finished reading a book on this topic recently and your review made me think of the parallels. 2w

Tried culling books from my Kindle. (I do that once a year.) Came across this book and only wanted to read the first page... I'm 60% in now.

Paris, the Salpetriere Asylum for women, in the late 19th century. Most women aren't mad, they were just unwanted and/or inconvenient.

Eugenie, 19 y/o, sees spirits. Which is the reason her family incarcerated her. Can she befriend the nurse Genevieve? Will she help her get out?

Literotica with a forced on story to fill the scenes between the porn.

CarolynM Don‘t you hate that? I don‘t mind fairly detailed sex scenes, but I like them to arise from the story, not be the reason to tell the story (such as it is). I wish they‘d just classify those books as erotica rather than romance. 3w

A low pick, because the MC's anxiety disorder, although well-written, felt very repetitive. Yes, I know this is a feature of AD.

The secondary characters were great and I'll definitely try a few of the recipes Hall collected in the back of the book.

CarolynM Just finished this one but haven‘t reviewed yet. I take your point about the repetition. When you added in the baking format there was quite a lot of it. I think I‘ll try the Croatian Fig Tart😋 3w

Those pronouns and their rapid changes give me whiplash. And the two women are about to go to a party and need to tread that pronoun-minefield extra carefully.

Earlier in the book: 'sie' and 'hie' and 'hes'

"Pronouns are 'e' and 'em' and 'eir,'.... 'Tha,' 'thon,' 'thos'..."

Later on " 'hoi,' 'hom,' and 'hos' " are added.

Smrloomis Huh. Is that intriguing or just frustrating? 4w
julesG @Smrloomis I find it frustrating, especially when one character changes clothes within one scene and hence gets three different pronouns within as many short paragraphs. 4w
julesG @Smrloomis It somehow takes me out of the flow. Reading about "hoi" then "tha" then "e" - it indicates the person went from overly male clothing to naked and then some sort of unisex. If the story keeps piling on more pronouns, I'll need a notebook to keep track 4w
Smrloomis @julesG yeah I don‘t think I could keep track without some sort of guide! 😅 4w
