The Hunter
The Hunter: A Parker Novel | Richard Stark
10 posts | 16 read | 15 to read
You probably havent ever noticed them. But theyve noticed you. They notice everything. Thats their job. Sitting quietly in a nondescript car outside a bank making note of the tellers work habits, the positions of the security guards. Lagging a few car lengths behind the Brinks truck on its daily rounds. Surreptitiously jiggling the handle of an unmarked service door at the racetrack. Theyre thieves. Heisters, to be precise. Theyre pros, and Parker is far and away the best of them. If youre planning a job, you want him in. Tough, smart, hardworking, and relentlessly focused on his trade, he is the heisters heister, the robbers robber, the heavys heavy. You dont want to cross him, and you dont want to get in his way, because hell stop at nothing to get what hes after. Parker, the ruthless antihero of Richard Starks eponymous mystery novels, is one of the most unforgettable characters in hardboiled noir. Lauded by critics for his taut realism, unapologetic amorality, and razor-sharp prose-styleand adored by fans who turn each intoxicating page with increasing urgencyStark is a master of crime writing, his books as influential as any in the genre. The University of Chicago Press has embarked on a project to return the early volumes of this series to print for a new generation of readers to discoverand become addicted to. In The Hunter, the first volume in the series, Parker roars into New York City, seeking revenge on the woman who betrayed him and on the man who took his money, stealing and scamming his way to redemption. Westlake knows precisely how to grab a reader, draw him or her into the story, and then slowly tighten his grip until escape is impossible.Washington Post Book World Elmore Leonard wouldnt write what he does if Stark hadnt been there before. And Quentin Tarantino wouldnt write what he does without Leonard. . . . Old master that he is, Stark does all of them one better.Los Angeles Times Donald Westlakes Parker novels are among the small number of books I read over and over. Forget all that crap youve been telling yourself about War and Peace and Proustthese are the books youll want on that desert island.Lawrence Block

A book set in the 1950s about a man who won‘t let anything or anyone get in the way of what he wants. This was a #roll100 pick and had been on my shelf for a long time. Looking forward to continuing the series for #serieslove2023 and #192025

Well...this was a book that I read. It was a fast and easy read, or I may not have finished it. Gross sexualized violence against women. Parker is an unlikeable sociopath. But this is a classic pulp crime series, and I'm hoping it gets better? Maybe?

This is dark, crime novel at its best. Master of the genre, Donald Westlake aka Richard Stark, delivers a masterpiece.

Cinfhen Oooh, that‘s a lot of high praise 🙌🏻 5y
writerlibrarian @Cinfhen it's a classic of the genre. Westlake kinda reinvented hardboiled noir in the 60s. It's dark, violent and sexist as hell. I liked the narrative style, less the very high octane violence. Still, at the time it was published.. masterpiece. (edited) 5y

Published in the early 1960's, this is a noir novel in the pure pulp fiction tradition. While the narrative is interesting, man seeks revenge from those who did him wrong, the treatment is done in a very wild, violent and creepy way. The main character is way out there as the kind of anti-hero that is not even one tiny bit redeemable. Not one bit. #NYCfiction

Warning I started this series a month ago and am up to book 10, my book budget is blown. Economical direct prose, fascinating anti-hero, pulse racing action and violence. This is noir crime at it's finest.

Great beer, not so great book. Totally would have abandoned this one if I weren't using it for the Panels Read Harder Challenge (#ripPanels). I liked Darwyne Cooke's graphic novel adaptation well enough, but couldn't handle the sledgehammer misogyny of the original.

The Hunter by Richard Stark: Stark is a master writer and Parker is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters. He's irascible, but focused, resourceful and tough as hell. Pitch-perfect crime noir. -Matt C., main floor
