This volume of Monstress revolves around the siege of the Arcanic city of Ravenna by the human Federation, so the balance tips from lore to action. There's still plenty of intrigue playing out in the background as various forces try to manipulate or control Maika. Plus, there are cat paratroopers.

I can‘t with how great this story is. Each book just layers on more details and twists! One thing I‘m kinda over is the constant use of “to quote the poets” but otherwise I‘m there for this journey!

Aside from the fact that the artwork is still as stunning as the first volume with its rich details and use of colors, this volume flips between past and present, giving readers more of Maika's backstory as she is still on the hunt for the remaining pieces of the mask but with obstacles in her way, she may be hunting for more than she was bargaining for.

I thought the fourth volume in this series lost a bit of its stride, the story getting too big. The fifth volume, though, is brilliant! Maika Halfwolf starts to embrace a bigger role for herself in the world. Watching this change in Maika is both exciting & terrifying (and I love it!). Most of all, Kippa is turning into an even more important character within this story with a mystery of her own to be unraveled. Can‘t recommend this series enough.

Well. I am reading Monstress Vol 5 the second time and this is the first page.
“Get ready, you little shits!”

Clearly, I am into heartfelt, kind, inspiring literature. 🤔

Ok, so I am totally obsessed with this series, even though it is everything I normally can‘t stand: full of blood and gore, horror, darkness, total seriousness, indecipherable plot... But goddess damn it, it is so gorgeous. And it respects my intelligence. And is full of powerful women.

In this one, Maika finds herself in the middle of war, so the gore quotient is even higher. She is starting to come to terms with her monstrousness. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There are many great things about this series: one is the world‘s fiercest cats. I don‘t want to meet HIM in a dark alley... (especially if I am a mouse)

Every volume, I think I couldn't love Monstress any more and then with every volume I'm once again proved wrong. Maika, Kippa and co. find themselves in the middle of a deadly battle. While vol. 5 is a bit horrifyingly (sometimes gratituously) violent, it is trying to depict the reality of war, I think. And gosh dang the story and illustrations are so good that I'm willing to deal with the violence to continue reading. It's just that good.

Gezemice Same here! Love it so much even though I am not a fan of blood and gore. 4y

Wow. Just wow. Monstress continues to be one of the most intricately plotted, gorgeously illustrated comics out there. It is a pleasure & a delight to step back into this world where war between humans & Arcanics looms. The world building is incredible, the characters nuanced, & the action relentless. Loved the story, where very little is what it seems, brought vividly to life by Takeda‘s brilliant artwork. It‘s sooooo good. Highly recommended.

Gezemice My thoughts exactly. Love it! 4y

#NCBD! I would say that I don‘t know where to start but I‘ve already read everything except the tagged book. 😊 Have to give a shout out to my comics store because they make sure I never miss a Skottie Young variant—love his Ludocrats cover. Several of the comics have tributes, art as well as a short column by Ta-Nehisi Coates, to Chadwick Boseman which is cool. Final issues for Mercy, Alienated & Clone Wars today. Everything else is ongoing.
