Does it get better? The New York Times bestselling author of Crank and Tricks explores the highly charged landscapes of bullying and forgiveness in this strong and worthy (Kirkus Reviews) novel.Matthew Turner knows it doesnt get better. His younger brother Luke was bullied mercilessly after one of Matts friends outed Luke to the whole school, and when Luke called Matton the brink of suicideMatt was too wrapped up in his new girlfriend to answer the phone. Now Luke is gone, and Matts family is falling apart. No matter what his girlfriend Hayden says about forgiveness, theres no way Matts letting those he blames off the hookincluding himself. As Matt spirals further into bitterness, he risks losing Hayden, the love of his life. But when her father begins to pressure the school board into banning books because of their homosexual content, he begins to wonder if he and Hayden ever had anything in common. With brilliant sensitivity and emotional resonance, bestselling author Ellen Hopkinss Rumble explores bullying and suicide in a powerful story that examines the value of forgiveness and reconciliation.

Mehso-so

I liked this overall. The main character is frustrating but likable & relatable, and his circumstances are heartbreaking. Through that main character, the book raises some great questions about Christianity, atheism, and faith. It‘s a thoughtful exploration of grief & anger in the aftermath of a sibling‘s suicide. The ending is a bit contrived & sudden, but it‘s fine. But WHY is it presented as narrative free verse poetry?! ⤵️

BarbaraJean I like novels in verse, but I think at least some of the poetry within that type of novel should stand alone as poetry, and this doesn‘t. Breaking up prose with line breaks doesn‘t make it poetry. That‘s what this felt like. The poetry format didn‘t add anything to the book for me—it was more distracting than anything. Rant aside…I did like it! 🤪 Thanks to @MeganAnn for the #NewYearWhoDis rec, and this is my June #BookSpin complete! @TheAromaofBooks (edited) 3y
TheAromaofBooks Yes, I have definitely read books like this, where they make it “verse“ by just... randomly hitting “enter“ on the keyboard in the middle of sentences. I find it very distracting. 3y

Pt 2.
Finally finished this one. I listened to it bc it popped on a list of suggestions on #Libby. I should've known better. As I've mentioned, I have a love/hate relationship with Ellen Hopkins. This book seemed to drag on. Not to mention how far fetched parts of it seemed... that ending? 😲 I just didn't enjoy it at all. Back story was too thorough on minor characters and we barely scratched the surface with some prominent ones. Overall, 2.5🌟

This book. Wow. I'm quite speechless. This book has skyrocketed to the top of my list of favourites. It's raw and honest and real and sad and beautiful all at the same time.
