China Miéville
China Miéville | Embassytown
China Miéville doesn't follow trends, he sets them. Relentlessly pushing his own boundaries as a writer - and in the process expanding the boundaries of the entire field - with Embassytown, Miéville has crafted an extraordinary novel that is not only a moving personal drama but a gripping adventure of alien contact and war.In the far future, humans have colonized a distant planet, home to the enigmatic Ariekei, sentient beings famed for a language unique in the universe, one that only a few altered human ambassadors can speak.Avice Benner Cho, a human colonist, has returned to Embassytown after years of deep-space adventure. She cannot speak the Ariekei tongue, but she is an indelible part of it, having long ago been made a figure of speech, a living simile in their language. When distant political machinations deliver a new ambassador to Arieka, the fragile equilibrium between humans and aliens is violently upset. Catastrophe looms, and Avice is torn between competing loyalties - to a husband she no longer loves, to a system she no longer trusts, and to her place in a language she cannot speak yet speaks through her.

I have been lurking on Litsy and am trying to get back into posting.

I loved the premise and world building of this story, but some parts dragged. Too much politics.

rabbitprincess I love Mieville‘s plots but have not yet been able to finish one of his books! 2y

This is some of the most incredible world building I‘ve ever seen — so utterly original. What I like about it especially is that it‘s all about linguistics. It‘s about discovery, learning, and language. It‘s utterly immersive in that not everything is explained. You have to learn as you go. Words are used that you have to figure out through context, and you can. It‘s so completely alien — a fantastic book that‘s going straight onto my picks shelf

This book is a fantastic mix of language, the strange, and some science fiction. I can't recommend it enough. #scifi #sciencefiction

TobeyTheScavengerMonk Probably Miéville's densest read, but I love it so much. 7y

I find this book oddly relevant in these crazy times. It's about language, truth, addiction and propaganda gone wild, all happening in a strange Mieville world. It took me a long time to finish - I'm not really a science fiction fan. Yet the language nerd in me kept being fascinated by this incredibly imaginative take on language. A bit too long, imho, but still worth reading. 4/5 stars.

I struggled to engage on an emotional level with this, but the sheer imagination and ideas that are woven within its construction make it well worth a look.

This tiny little ominous quote has always stayed with me. So simple, so eloquent, so frightening. #24in48 #readathon

Wow. I'm speechless....ironically enough (and I'd also imagine that I'm not the only one to have made that joke about this book!). China is a ridiculously skilful author, to interweave a book about language but in a such a sci-fi/fantasy manner, is something that everyone needs to read! âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸âï¸

This one has me so intrigued. Such skilful world building, in such an economical and descriptive way. You don't feel like you're being beaten over the head with THIS WORLD IS DIFFERENT AND I WILL DESCRIBE THIS IN TEDIOUS DETAIL UNTIL YOU UNDERSTAND IT.

Sue This was my first Meiville, and I just loved it. 8y
Ais I'm finding it very difficult to put down and do adulty type things! 8y
