The Lion of Mars
The Lion of Mars | Jennifer L. Holm
6 posts | 8 read | 1 to read
Blast off with New York Times bestselling and Newbery Honor-winning Jennifer L. Holm's out-of-this-world new novel about a kid raised on Mars who learns that he can't be held back by the fears of the grown-ups around him. Bell has spent his whole life - all eleven years of it - on Mars. But he's still just a regular kid - he loves cats, any kind of cake, and is curious about the secrets the adults in the US colony are keeping. Like, why don't have contact with anyone on the other Mars colonies? Why are they so isolated? When a virus breaks out and the grown-ups all fall ill, Bell and the other children are the only ones who can help. It's up to Bell - a regular kid in a very different world - to uncover the truth and save his family ... and possibly unite an entire planet. Mars may be a world far, far away, but in the hands of Jennifer L. Holm, beloved and bestselling author of The Fourteenth Goldfish, it can't help but feel like home.

Our lovable narrator, Bell, is the youngest of a group of kids being raised on the United States colony on Mars. When the adults fall ill, the kids must decide what to do and end up learning a good lesson about working together and the dangers of isolation.

So many good #letterl books to choose from but I went with my MG favorite of 2021!
Runners up: The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles, The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and The Last Cuentista by Donna Barba Higuera

Anyone else have a copy of this book like this? Is it intentional? I actually haven't started reading yet, so maybe it will make sense with the story. Or maybe it's a publishing mistake. 🤷🏻‍♀️

BookKenz I don't have a copy of that book, but my copy of My Sister, The Serial Killer has the last 50 pages or so printed upside down. 2y
smilingshelves @Kenziejo That's even weirder than only part of it is upside down! 2y
BucklingBookshelves I missed this post! If it‘s a library book, my best guess is they accidentally attached the mylar cover upside down. 🤷🏼‍♀️ 2y
smilingshelves @BucklingBookshelves Yup, that's exactly what happened! The librarian I told thought it was pretty funny. Of course, she wasn't the one who had done it in the first place. 😄 2y

This is a really cute middle grade book about a boy who is living on Mars when suddenly the adults get sick and the kids have to save them all. Highly recommend for kiddos, especially cat lovers 😉

It is easy to allow misunderstandings and grief to divide people. The kids on Mars find out just how dangerous isolation can be in times of crisis. Bell finds the courage to reach out to others. Step into an imaginative tale of a space colony and its inhabitants and the kids who will bring them all together. A hopeful, adventurous bit of fun.

Excited to get this book on my kindle from the local library. I love J.L. Holm books. Now I need to purchase a copy for my school library.
